Two more teams get their Indian Premier League season underway on Monday as the IPL 2025 campaign begins for the Delhi Capitals and the Lucknow Super Giants when the two sides meet in Visakhapatnam.
These two sides missed out on the playoffs on net run rate last season so not only will that motivate them to go better this time around but it might also ensure that they give everything for the full 40 overs which should ensure more competitive fayre.
Delhi Capitals
It is now four years since the Delhi Capitals last made the postseason in this tournament and you would imagine that is the first box that they need to tick off this time around. There has been a lot of coming and going at Delhi in recent seasons and the injury which impacted Rishabh Pant never helped them either. You sense that the Capitals need a season of consolidation and consistency both in personnel and performance before they can rebuild to where they want to be.
This is going to be a much changed Delhi team for this season with the headline additions being KL Rahul and Mitchell Starc. The former is a fitness doubt for this match although the vibes are that he will be good to go which will be a huge boost. If there is one criticism of the Capitals then it certainly comes in the lack of depth in the mystery spin department but they make up for that with new ball bowlers who should have some fun in the competition.
Lucknow Super Giants
The Lucknow Super Giants will have been disappointed to have missed out on the finals last season having made them the year before and as such they will be eager to get back there this time around. Like a lot of the teams in the competition, Lucknow released a lot of players and rebuilt again in the auction so there is the majority of a new squad which will be looking to get this franchise back to where they want to be. That will give them a little bit of freedom early in the competition.
They will need to get results fairly quickly though because a lot of money went on this squad in the auction but the problem they are going to have initially is they haven’t got many seam bowlers available because of injury. That is going to leave them vulnerable but at least this is an away match which they can go at as a free hit because most of their better results are likely to come on the trickier pitches back home. If Lucknow can bat second they have the power to get any score chased down.

Key Players
Delhi Capitals don’t look the strongest in this competition with the bat and if Jake Fraser-McGurk can’t find his best form with the bat then that department is going to look even lighter. He is going through that second year syndrome that so many who burst onto the scene do but Delhi need him to come out of it quickly.
Rishabh Pant clearly has to be the key player for the Lucknow Super Giants in this match. Having spent his entire IPL career so far representing the Delhi Capitals he now goes against them for the first time and will want to make a big impression for his new team.
Betting
This is probably the toughest of the opening round of matches to bet on largely because we are having a guess a little bit more about how the two sides will line up after all the changes they have made in the close season. If I had to guess I would say Delhi will be stronger with the ball but Lucknow will balance that out with the bat so the toss could be crucial here. Without knowing the outcome of that until much nearer game time I’ll play safe and just focus on the runs.
However these sides line up there will be no shortage of big hitters on show and this ground has a high run rate, in fact it is the third highest in the Indian Premier League at 9.2 runs per over in the IPL. That bodes well for a high scoring game and when you consider Lucknow are having big problems with injured bowlers you would think they are going to have to come out all guns blazing with the bat. Delhi have players to fight fire with fire in that regard so I like the idea of over 355.5 runs landing here.
