The top goalscorer market for League Two looks an extremely wide open betting market with bookmakers going 8/1 the field. That highlights two things. Firstly how high the level of striker is in the division and secondly the amount of top players who are gracing this league this season.
Matt Tubbs was the top scorer in the division last season and the Portsmouth forward is the favourite to repeat that again this season. He didn’t score as many with Portsmouth as he did with AFC Wimbledon but he does score a significant percentage of goals with penalties and he’s probably a worthy favourite but given the quality in this league I have to take him on.
The man to take him on with looks pretty obvious. Craig Mackail-Smith dominated this division in his Dagenham days and his Peterborough and Brighton days have seen him score goals regularly at the levels above this one. He is now reunited with the man who launched his career and has something to prove and if John Still keeps him fit you would think the son-in-law of Barry Fry will score a boat load of goals this season in a Luton side that looks full of creativity.
Reuben Reid and Marc Richards both went well in the division last season and remain in the division this year and neither can be discounted. I’m not sure if Plymouth will go as well this season but there is no reason why Reid won’t repeat his heroics of last season. Richards is another who has scored goals at a higher level.
Izale McLeod is 20/1 in the betting and if he joins another League Two club then that could look a decent price but all the signs are he’s on his way out of Crawley and you would think he will move to a higher division so I’m not interested in him. Barry Corr, Danny Hylton, Tom Nichols and Jamie Cureton are all worth mentioning but my second bet in this division comes further down the market.
Jon Stead is getting no younger but he was scoring goals galore for Bradford last season on their way to the quarter final of the FA Cup and you would think he will be too good for this division this season. Stead has scored goals wherever he has been and is a natural scorer. He probably isn’t as good as he once was but experience can be vital in a goalscorer and given his past record 33/1 looks massive on him.
