Metro Bank One Day Cup 2024 – Wednesday 14th August Matches Tips and Betting Preview

The group stage of the Metro Bank One Day Cup concludes on Wednesday with another full day of matches as we find out which six teams will progress to the knockout stages of the domestic 50 over competition.

There are still so many teams in with a chance of reaching the quarter finals and we also need to find out who will top the two groups and move straight into the semi-finals. Unfortunate the double header in The Hundred gets the TV coverage so we need the county live streams to follow these games.

Group A

Somerset are already through to the knockout stages but they are not in action on Wednesday. We need to find out the other two teams to come out of this group. Worcestershire are in pole position and if they can beat Lancashire at Old Trafford not only will they go through but they will host their first knockout match. Durham are in control of their destiny for the other spot. They host Derbyshire knowing that if they win they will go through but if they lose they will go out. A Derbyshire win could see them progressing but only if Hampshire, fourth at the beginning of the day, lose away to Middlesex. Derbyshire and Hampshire wins sees the latter going through. The other match comes from Canterbury where Kent and Northamptonshire play out the final game of their campaign.

Group B

We know that Glamorgan and Warwickshire are through to the knockout stages in Group B and on Wednesday we will find out which one skips the quarter finals and heads straight into the semi-finals. Glamorgan are in control of their own destiny as they host Yorkshire knowing that a win will see them into the semi-finals. If they lose then Warwickshire will be waiting to take advantage. They host already eliminated Nottinghamshire at Rugby. Were both to lose then Leicestershire could top the group if they can find a win against Gloucestershire in Bristol but should the home side win that match then it will be them who go through to the quarter finals at the expense of the defending champions so there is a lot on the line in this group. The other match sees Sussex and Essex completing their 50 over season.

Betting

The knockout stages of this tournament don’t actually begin until Friday but I think it is fair to say we have an effective knockout match in Bristol and one where I think the run line is very much on the low side. I say that because neither of the bowling attacks for Gloucestershire or Leicestershire really convince me and generally the pitch at Bristol plays ok. When you look at the team news for this one Gloucestershire have lost two bowlers to the England Lions and another who can bowl and the replacements are nothing like as strong. Leicestershire’s three best bowlers are at The Hundred.

Both batting units do look strong though. Leicestershire have Louis Kimber back from The Hundred now and he goes into a batting outfit that includes a couple of overseas stars in Peter Handscomb and Ajinkya Rahane not to mention the likes of Lewis Hill, Sol Budinger and a couple of others. In their last two matches, Gloucestershire have chased down 330 at Trent Bridge with time to spare and got to a target of 133 in just 20 overs against Sussex at the weekend. This feels like a match where the batters should have a lot more joy than the bowlers so I’ll take the over here.
