There is one match to round off what has been a pretty entertaining weekend in the MLS and it comes from Audi Field in Washington where DC United host Atlanta United in a huge Eastern Conference clash.
Atlanta United have seen themselves lose top spot in the race for the Supporters’ Shield but a win here will get them back in pole position for that. DC United are now nine points off the play-offs with matches beginning to run out so they clearly need a win.
DC United
After a really good run all of a sudden DC United are looking like a side who might have run out of steam after a hectic run of matches in recent times. They have lost their last two matches without scoring and in truth their performance in them have been quite tame so they need to find it in them to go again if they can.
That will most likely need to involve team changes but this might not be the time to be leaving key players out of their side so Ben Olsen has a few conundrums on his hands. Generally in recent times the DC United attack has been very strong and they have been scoring plenty of goals. If they are going to start another run for the play-offs they need to get back to doing that here.
Atlanta United
The Five Stripes head to Washington in decent enough form and it is actually a credit to the levels New York Red Bulls have been operating at that Atlanta have fallen away from top spot in the Eastern Conference. I’m sure nobody is panicking in Atlanta just yet but there will be a real emphasis on winning the Supporters’ Shield as their home form is such that they would almost be a goal to the good kicking off in any MLS Cup final there.
We know all about the Atlanta attack and in Josef Martinez they have the record scorer for a single season in MLS history and he is expected to add to his tally. Usually with the amount of possession that they have the Atlanta defence is generally pretty good so there is a lot to like about them heading into this game.
Team News
Yamil Asad is questionable to face his former club as he has an ankle issue while Taylor Kemp is one of a few players who are definitely out. Wayne Rooney is expected to start and lead the line.
Darlington Nagbe remains out for Atlanta United but there are no fresh injury concerns for the side looking to go back to the summit of the MLS standings. There is no evidence that key players will be rested either.

Betting
I think the need or the will that both will have to win this match will ensure we get an open and expansive game of football. DC United are likely to come out of the blocks but if they tire in the second half as they have been doing then Atlanta could feast on them in the second half.
Atlanta could very easily cover a 3 goal line in any match they kick off in but DC United have to go in search of goals in this one because they have to start winning matches again. All things being equal I’m comfortable that we are going to see at least three in this one and potentially a couple more on top.
