The latest MLS weekend begins in Minnesota on Friday night with a Western Conference clash between the Minnesota United and FC Dallas. Both sides suffered losses on their return from the mid-season break so will be keen to pick up a victory here.
Minnesota can close the gap between themselves and the play-off places with a win in this one while Dallas will move level on points with Sporting Kansas City at the top of the Western table should they pick up the three points.
Minnesota United
I guess in many ways we saw one of the big issues with Minnesota last week. They just seem unable to repel opposing sides when they are under duress, notably when they are leading and trying to close out a game. Whenever they lead by a goal you never truly fancy them to win. The only time you are confident with them is when they have banked a few goals early on.
It will have been a real blow to lose to the Colorado Rapids last week, even more so from a winning position, as they have clearly been the worst side in the Conference thus far so it is like losing ground to par on the rest of the teams in the table. That said they are much stronger at home where 13 of their 16 points this season have come.
FC Dallas
It may not have been a surprise that FC Dallas went to the New York Red Bulls and lost last week, the Red Bulls are one of the better sides in the competition, but to lose to them when their opponents had 10 men for an hour will have been a bit of a shock. This is an FC Dallas team that are not used to losing this term so to do so in those circumstances will have been a bit of a blow.
To be fair though, it continued what has been relatively poor form on the road despite them actually having the third best away record in the Conference. Dallas have goals in them however and they will want to show that here but as ever their success generally comes about from a tight defence, another thing they will want to highlight here.
Team News
Minnesota United will be missing their goal in Colorado last week in Miguel Ibarra who was suspended late on and misses this match as a result. Francisco Calvo remains on international duty while Kevin Molino, Ethan Finlay and Abu Dunladi are big players who are out injured.
FC Dallas also have a key man suspended after Reto Ziegler was dismissed in the last minute of the defeat in New York last week. Santiago Mosquera remains on the sidelines for the Texas side for this match.

Betting
I’m often partial to a bet on the Friday night match but I can’t find a route to get involved in this one. Both sides go into the match off the back of defeats and in truth neither really convince me enough to stick any of my hard earned on them.
Ironically you can make a bit of a case for both teams. Minnesota are much better on their own patch while FC Dallas don’t lose too often but that might just mean that there is more draw potential in this one than I would like so I’ll sit this one out and wait for better opportunities to come over the weekend.
