There is one midweek match in the MLS which comes from Yankee Stadium as the New York City FC host the New England Revolution in an Eastern Conference clash which has plenty of importance placed on it.
Both sides need to win this match. New York City have fallen six points off the top two and with matches running out they can’t afford to let that gap extend. The Revolution are the same six points off of the play-off places and they need a win soon to get back in the race.
New York City FC
After spending most of the season so far in the top two of the table, New York City FC have hit the buffers in recent weeks and slid away from contention. They have gone three matches without a win which for them in the regular season is quite something. They won’t not make the postseason but a bye to begin it would have been nice. That is unlikely if they fail to win here.
Injuries have been a big thing for NYCFC this season. They have not been able to pick their strongest side for much of the campaign and with this being international week they won’t be able to here either, but prior to this week NYCFC had been getting key personnel back so their drop in form is particularly weird.
New England Revolution
In the early stages of the campaign the New England Revolution looked locked in for a postseason berth but in recent times that has disappeared and now they need to fly home if they are to extent their campaign beyond the regular season. They go into this match without a win in their last nine matches.
Allowing Lee Nguyen to leave looked a big call at the time and I wonder how much his absence is playing a part in this poor run of form. Whatever it is that is affecting it is showing no signs of ending so something is going to have to give for Brad Friedel and his men or else they will be watching the play-offs like the rest of us.
Team News
New York City FC will be without some key players here either through international duty or injury. Maxime Chanot, Rodney Wallace, Ismael Tajouri-Shradi and Ebenezer Ofori are all with their countries while Yangel Herrera, Jo Inge Berget, Alex Callens and Jesus Medina are all injured.
New England Revolution are also without some pretty key players with Luis Caicedo out with suspension and Zachary Herivaux and Gabriel Somi both away on international duty. Chris Tierney remains on the sidelines.

Betting
When I saw this fixture was on the horizon I was planning a decent bet on the home side but since then they have dipped in form and lost a lot of players for this match for various reasons and they no longer look anything like the good bet that they looked even this time last week in truth.
I can’t be taking the Revolution on any grounds with their current form. Sometimes you can see a run of form coming to an end and can work with that but you need to see a sign of that happening and I don’t see that with New England. Putting that all together this becomes a pretty obvious no bet match.
