One of the more important regular season New York derbies takes place on Wednesday evening when New York City FC host their rivals from across the Hudson River in the New York Red Bulls at Yankee Stadium.
These two sides are the closest challengers to Atlanta United in the Eastern Conference and the winners here will not only move to within a point or a few goals of the Five Stripes but they will also put a bit of distance between themselves in the race for a bye in the postseason.
New York City FC
The New York City FC side have hit the skids a little in recent times. They have just one win in their last four matches although in fairness to them they have been away in three of those contests and it is never easy to travel and get victories in this competition. Despite their poor run they are only four points off top spot in the Conference.
One of the reasons for the dry spell that NYC are experiencing has been some injury problems they have had to negotiate. They have been without both David Villa and Jo Inge Berget for periods of time in recent matches which has left them short up front and with no press up top they have found teams finding them easier to attack.
New York Red Bulls
It is still the regular season so it stands to reason that the New York Red Bulls are in good form. They are perennial specialists in the first stage of the campaign but then get found wanting later in the season when the going gets tougher. They go into this match with five wins from their last seven matches so they are in excellent form.
The Red Bulls have scored in all of those matches and kept clean sheets in three of them too so when you create chances and score at one end and are hard to break down at the other you’re never going to be too far away. They have one of the best goal converters in the competition too so the visitors look nicely equipped for this one.
Team News
New York City will be missing Ronald Matarrita for this match as he is suspended after his sending off in Philadelphia while Jesus Medina and Alex Callens have joined Yangel Herrera on the injured list and miss out here too.
Michael Murillo is suspended for New York Red Bulls which could leave them a little light down the right hand side. The likes of Florian Valot and Kyle Duncan remain out through injury. All eyes will be on Kaku who has been one of the stars of the season.

Betting
Derby matches are never easy to bet on and this one in particular is no different. I would suggest that the draw potential in this one is fairly high but I’m no massive backer of the draw. The smaller pitch at Yankee Stadium may tighten this match up even more.
Usually in MLS you would back the home side but NYC are still missing some key players. I’m sure the Red Bulls would be happy with a point here so nothing stands out enough to tempt me in. I’ll sit this out and save my money for later in the weekend.
