MLS 2018 – Wednesday 19th September Matches Betting Preview

There are three matches in Major League Soccer on Wednesday night as the places in the play-offs at the end of the season begin to take on added significance. Each of the three matches involves at least one side fighting for spots so it should be an entertaining night.

It is double jeopardy for those of us who are in the UK. None of these matches are on TV for us to take in and the first kick off is 3.30am so it is probably an evening in which only the insomniacs can enjoy the action.

Portland Timbers vs Columbus Crew (03.30)

The opening match of the night sees two sides battling it out for positions in the play-offs in their respective conferences doing battle when the Portland Timbers play host to the Columbus Crew.

Portland can put seven points behind themselves and the chasing pack for the final spot in the West while the Crew can stick seven points between themselves and Philadelphia Union in the race to secure home advantage in the first round so this is a big match for both sides.

Usually I would be all over the Timbers on their home patch but their loss at Houston last week is a major turn off. It isn’t to the extent that I was to back the Crew though so this is an easy one to swerve and take a watching brief on.

San Jose Earthquakes vs Atlanta United (04.00)

The bottom side in the Western Conference take on the leaders of the Eastern Conference in one of the later kick offs as the San Jose Earthquakes take on Atlanta United in what might just be the pick of the matches across the night.

San Jose’s season has been over from a competitive standpoint for a while so this is all about Atlanta, who can go four points clear at the top of the Eastern Conference, should they win this match. I expect them to win but odds on away from home in MLS is an absolute no no.

There is one bet which is probably equally as obvious and that is the goal market where we have a line of 3.25 goals. San Jose have just shipped five to Sporting Kansas City and have conceded 11 goals in their last three home matches in all. They do score regularly though to be fair while Atlanta are the leading scorers in MLS. Saturday was their first clean sheet in eight matches though so both sides should score with Atlanta likely to ensure we sail well beyond 3.25 goals.

Seattle Sounders vs Philadelphia Union (04.00)

Two sides in the play-off spots and in great form in their respective conferences meet at CenturyLink Field in the other match when Seattle Sounders take on Philadelphia Union. Seattle Sounders are charging to the extent that they could get snatch a bye while the Union are chasing a home game in the first round of the play-offs.

It is always hard to oppose Seattle at this stage of the season but to be fair to Philadelphia they are one of the better sides on the road so this could be the match that Seattle’s nine match winning run ends. That said you would be foolish to bet on that. There could be goals but even then this could be tight. It screams no bet to me and I’ll take notice of that.
