There are six matches left before the Major League Soccer season breaks for the Gold Cup and the first of those comes along on Wednesday when we head north of the border for the clash between Montreal Impact and the Seattle Sounders.
Both sides head towards the break in good positions in their respective Conferences and have another chance to bolster their position before the time off. With that in mind we should get a competitive game, one which is live on the various streams for us in the UK.
Montreal Impact
While this is a much improved campaign for the Montreal Impact so far it has been a very strange one in many ways. They have seven wins to their name this term but at the same time they have seven losses as well so there is very much an all or nothing nature to their season to date. When they return from the break they will be looking for a bit more consistency to consolidate their place in the top seven.
In an ideal world the Impact will score more goals in the second half of the campaign. Although they have the same number of wins to losses, their goal difference is -8 although to be fair to them a bad day at the office in Kansas City accounts for a lot of that. They are sometimes a little too defensive for this league but if they can rectify that in the time off they could well challenge for the title.
Seattle Sounders
We have praised the Seattle Sounders for their fine start to the season but you can tell summer has arrived before they have suffered a dip and their form is now what we would expect it to be at this time of year based on their previous campaigns. They always come good in the second half of the season but head into the break in indifferent form and that is how they are going right now without a win in three outings.
It is hard to explain their recent downturn in form too because they have all the tools to be going very well in this competition and I’m sure we’ll see that after the midseason break. Despite their three match winless run, the Sounders will still move up to second in the Western Conference with a win here so it is hardly doom and gloom just yet. It would be good for their morale if they do win to go into the break.
Team News
Montreal Impact are missing some big players for this match with Bacary Sagna and Ignacio Piatti are on the sidelines with injury. They are joined in the treatment room by Mathieu Choiniere, Clement Bayiha and Orji Okwonkwo. Samuel Piette is among a quartet away on international duty.
Seattle Sounders have been decimated even more by international absentees. Jordan Morris, Cristian Roldan, Nicolas Lodeiro, Raul Ruidiaz, Roman Torres, Gustav Svensson and Brad Smith are all regulars that the Sounders will be missing.
Betting
There are matches in MLS that jump out at you from a betting point of view and then there are ones like this which have you running hard for cover and going nowhere near it. This would probably have been a tough match to bet on at the best of times anyway given the form and inconsistency of the two sides but when you factor in the absentees it gets even harder.
This isn’t going to be too far from a glorified reserve match and predicting the outcome of something like that is not easy. With all the missing players for Seattle I wanted to have Montreal on side but then they are without their main man in Ignacio Piatti so that is the final nail to convince me to run for the covers and not to get involved here.
