The MLS weekend concludes with another couple of matches on Sunday evening as the race for the Western Conference play-offs gets very interesting. After Portland Timbers’ win on Saturday night there is plenty to play for on Sunday.
Both matches are live on TV for those of us who are in the UK although anyone wanting to watch the second one will be staying up deep into the early hours of the morning as it is a very late kick off for a Sunday night.
Seattle Sounders vs Los Angeles Galaxy (23.30)
The first match of the night sees the two sides in fifth and sixth in the Western Conference table meeting at CenturyLInk Field where the Seattle Sounders take on Los Angeles Galaxy in a contest which both teams need to win to make their path into the postseason a little more comfortable.
It was only two matches ago that these two sides played out a 2-2 draw in California and I guess that gives us a sense of how tight this one could well be. When you factor in the added tightness of the league table now then this one really does have the potential for being tight and tense. If I had to I’d back the draw here but I’m not a fan of that play as a rule so I’m happy to leave this one well alone.
Los Angeles FC vs Minnesota United (03.30)
The second match of the night comes from the Banc of California Stadium where the runaway leaders of the Western Conference, Los Angeles FC, take on a Minnesota United side who are clinging on to their spot in the top seven.
Let’s not make any mistake about it, Los Angeles FC are the best team in this competition by a landslide. That might not eventually ring true when the MLS Cup is handed out given the new quirky nature of the play-offs but that they are 11pts ahead of any other side in MLS and 18pts ahead of anyone in the West, with matches in hand on both, highlights just how far clear of the rest they are.
Minnesota United could have their work cut out here it has to be said. They are not the best side on the road anyway but this is the Lion’s den. LAFC have only dropped four points at home all season and two of them was in that epic derby here last week. They have scored 21 times in their last five home matches and that ratio can see them cover a 1.5 goal handicap against a suddenly goal shy Minnesota side.
