The wonderful run of MLS action concludes on Sunday night as four more matches take place on what could be a special evening of football given the identity of some of the sides who are involved in the action.
We have the defending champions, Wayne Rooney and the latest leg of the Cascadia Cup making up just part of what looks like a decent night of football with two of the matches live on TV in the UK and the other two on the streams.
Sunday’s fixtures are as follows: (UK kick off in brackets)
Atlanta United FC v D.C. United (21.00)
FC Cincinnati v New England Revolution (23.00)
Orlando City vs New York Red Bulls (00.30)
Seattle Sounders vs Portland Timbers (02.30)
Preview
The two matches that are live on TV on Sunday evening are the first and third ones so it is the Eastern Conference that is very much in the focus. The first game sees a surging Atlanta United taking on a DC United side who are stuttering at the wrong time while the second game sees the inconsistent Orlando City taking on a New York Red Bulls team who are in the play-offs in the division but for whom there is still a whole lot more to come from.
The other two matches are also Conference clashes, with one game in each. In the Eastern Conference it is a chance for the New England Revolution to get themselves into the play-off zone when they go to the worst side in the division in FC Cincinnati. After that we have the latest leg of the Cascadia Cup as Seattle Sounders host the Portland Timbers in a match which could just be the pick of the evening’s games.
Betting
I think in present form you have to take New England Revolution to see off FC Cincinnati. Both teams were involved in midweek outings with the Revs ruthless against the Vancouver Whitecaps and Cincinnati walloped at home by DC United. There is no surprise that New England have caught fire since Bruce Arena went in there. He is a top class coach who is getting the best out of a team that has some decent talent to come to the fore. Cincinnati were in better form prior to that midweek loss but that defeat doesn’t help matters. I’ve got to think the Revs will have too much here.
Matches involving the New York Red Bulls have been high scoring in recent times which is a usual trend for them and I expect their contest with Orlando City to be the same. Both teams played in midweek so there could be some tired legs and minds in defensive areas which should open it up for two talented attacks to deliver the goods. Eight of the Red Bulls’ last nine matches had had three or more goals while a couple of recent Orlando games have too. This fixture ended 4-3 last year and while I don’t envisage seven goals here I do think we’ll get enough to cover a 2.75 line.
