MLS 2019 – Wednesday 25th September Matches Tips and Betting Preview

There are just three match days left in the regular MLS season and the first of those comes up on Wednesday evening when six matches take place up and down the country which will have a big influence on the play-off reckoning.

Two of the six matches are live on TV for those of us who are in the UK while the other four matches are covered on the streams although a number of them are deep into the early hours of Thursday morning.

Big Matches

The two TV games are huge in the Western Conference. The first one comes in the second match of the night where Minnesota United will look to move into second spot when they play host to Sporting Kansas City whose season is over from a competitive standpoint. The other match sees Portland Timbers hosting New England Revolution in a clash for all the marbles. Portland go into the night one spot just outside the play-offs in the West but they’ll end it in the top seven with a win. New England are in the last spot in the East and can move to within a point of guaranteeing an extension to their season if they win.

Best of the Rest

The action begins with the top two in the Eastern Conference battling it out in a pretty important match. New York City FC will secure the title in the East and a first round postseason bye if they win. If Atlanta win then the race for top spot intensifies. Speaking of top spot, LAFC will secure the Supporters’ Shield if they come out on top against Houston Dynamo, a side playing for little. Real Salt Lake host LA Galaxy in a big match in the fight for the final home spot in the first round of the postseason. San Jose Earthquakes will look to stay in the top seven when they take on the Philadelphia Union.

Betting

I like a couple of bets on Wednesday night and they both come in the TV matches. Sporting Kansas City haven’t got anything going all season and I’m not convinced they are going to get a whole lot of joy from their trip to Minnesota United. Sporting Kansas City shipped seven in their latest away game and have conceded 12 in their last three in total. I’ve no idea how Minnesota didn’t score at Portland at the weekend but it doesn’t really matter as they are a different beast on their own patch, where only Philadelphia Union have left with all three points. Mason Toye has added a different element to the Minny attack and I think that is significant here. The other thing that is important is that SKC defender Matt Besler is suspended. I’m happy to take Minnesota to win this one.

Portland Timbers were expected to finish the season strongly with a raft of home matches backed up in their schedule after building work forced them to play most of the first-half of the campaign on the road. It hasn’t worked out that way though as they are without a win in their last three on their own patch and haven’t scored in any of those games. In fact, heading into their match against the New England Revolution they have only scored four goals in seven outings – poor form at the worst possible time. New England can play with a little bit of freedom in this match as they are scoring goals and although three draws in their last four matches is not what they wanted another one of those would be fine here. I actually think NE have a chance of winning the game but the odds on them on the Asian line makes them pretty attractive.
