The MLS is Back tournament concluded in Orlando on Tuesday night and on Wednesday evening the regular season will resume in Texas when FC Dallas take on Nashville SC in a match which should have taken place in the restart event in Orlando but was stopped due to positive Covid tests.
These two sides will meet again at the weekend too as they bid to catch up on matches they missed out on during the MLS is Back tournament so they are going to be familiar rivals moving forward. This is the chance for both to draw first blood.
Where to watch
The match will be shown live on Free Sports for those of us in the UK. The build up begins at 1.35am with the match kicking off shortly after that. It is also on offer on the streaming consoles at bookmaker sites.
FC Dallas
It has been so long since FC Dallas played a competitive match that what went before almost doesn’t matter anymore. The big thing will be on how they look from a cohesion point of view having had to come out of the Orlando bubble after Covid tests were positive. Those players will have had to isolate so you would think there is a chance that Dallas will not be at their sharpest here, which would be in keeping with what we saw in the early stages of the MLS is Back tournament.
When things were all normal seemingly ages ago, FC Dallas made a bright beginning to the season with a win over Philadelphia Union, which certainly doesn’t look too bad now in light of how they went at the MLS is Back tournament, and a 2-2 draw with a Montreal Impact side who probably had the edge on them competitively after playing in the Champions League prior to that. Dallas have always had a sound defensive structure and if they can continue to add goals to their game they’ll be dangerous.

Nashville SC
After the build up and anticipation for their debut season in MLS, it all feels like something of an anti-climax for them but finally they can get some sort of normality to their season. They were due to be a part of the MLS is Back tournament but Covid tests meant they were unable to fulfil their obligation so having gone five months without a competitive hit their players should be itching to get back up and running.
Two matches is not much of a sample size to weigh up a team accurately but there was a sense going into the season that Nashville SC would be a side that would look to soak up pressure and try and hit teams on the counterattack and that is exactly what we saw in their opening two matches. Both ended in defeat but they were against two of the better sides in MLS at present. They face another stiff opponent now so they will need to be on top of their game.
Betting
I wasn’t going to get involved in the betting for this match and just use it as a watching brief for what is to come, but if there is a lesson in this game it is never to pre-judge a match or event and not look at the odds just in case something stands out, because having done exactly that there is a line and a price which looks a little out of place that has reeled me in accordingly. That comes in the 2.5 goals betting where the under looks a huge price.
In nearly every league we have seen return from an extended break the first round of matches have been low scoring and pretty slow paced and I don’t see why that is going to change here. Nashville aren’t the most attack minded side we’ve ever seen in MLS while Dallas often take a bit of beating in Frisco. If you think back to the Premier League, Championship and even the early stages of the MLS is Back tournament, low scoring matches were a feature. I’ll back that trend to continue here.
