The penultimate full round of matches in the Major League Soccer regular season gets going on Saturday evening when the first two games are played out. With the play-off format now finalised and teams knowing points per game are the big thing, the three points could be extremely valuable.
We have a match in each Conference over the course of the evening on Saturday with the first from the Western Conference before moving to the Eastern Conference. Both matches are live on TV in the UK and both relatively early so we can settle in for a night of action.
FC Dallas vs Houston Dynamo (19.30 – Sky Football)
The opening match of the night is a battle of Texas as FC Dallas host their state rivals Houston Dynamo in what is a game that is bigger than just a relatively local rivalry. Houston will have had hopes of making the play-offs this term but those hopes get dashed once and for all if they don’t win this.
The change in method of working out the league tables has probably worked well for FC Dallas. Although they were looking good for the postseason had it been determined on points they could still have been caught but it is unlikely that they will be under the new stipulation. On the flip side of that Houston are going to have their work cut out to make it into the top eight from the position they find themselves in which will be disappointing for them.
Form and logic haven’t really been a feature of this season but I do think it will do here. Dallas have only lost one home game all season and while they are in the play-offs will want to finish higher for a better route in them whereas Houston have one away win all season and motivation will be low with the allowance that this is a derby. Dallas at around evens looks good enough to me.

Nashville SC vs Chicago Fire (00.30 – Free Sports)
The second match of the night comes in the Eastern Conference where one of the beneficiaries from the change in setup is in action when Chicago Fire head to Nashville SC in what could be a huge match in the shape of the remainder of the season.
Nashville SC have put together some excellent form recently and that along with the new system means they are assured of a play-off spot and if they keep winning they’ll avoid the ‘play in’ round of the postseason. Chicago Fire moved up to the last play-off place when the change was announced so they remain in control of their own destiny as well which makes this an interesting contest. I’m not that keen on betting in Nashville matches at present and I saw enough from Chicago in midweek not to oppose them but no bet really stands out.
