MLS 2021 – Friday 16th April Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The brand new MLS season begins with a couple of clashes from the Western Conference on Friday night as the leading division in America embarks on another seven month campaign which will once again conclude in the MLS Cup Final.

Every team will have plenty of work to do in order to be there and all four on show on Friday evening will be eager to get off to a winning start and lay an early platform down for the season. Matches in the same Conference always matter more in this league so we should get a decent night of football.

Where to watch

Both matches will be shown live and in full on the Free Sports channel in the UK. There is no build up to the games which kick off at 1am and immediately after the first one finishes.

Houston Dynamo vs San Jose Earthquakes (01.00)

The opening match of the season sees two double winners of the MLS Cup going at it when the Houston Dynamo host the San Jose Earthquakes in what should be an entertaining opener at the BBVA Stadium.

Last year was something of a write off for the Houston Dynamo and it goes without saying that they will be looking for a much stronger campaign this time around. San Jose actually made the postseason last term before losing to the Sporting Kansas City outfit in one of the craziest games you will ever see in your life. If they can build on that this term they will be nicely placed indeed. These two sides have both done good work in the off season and look to be in better shape starting out in this campaign which bodes well.

These are two of the more attacking sides in MLS and generally when they meet there are goals in their matches. I don’t think that trend will end here. San Jose have a massively attacking style which breeds goals both for them and against them and I don’t expect them to change in that regard given the players they have brought in this season. There are more than enough goals in the Dynamo so over 3 will do me here.

Seattle Sounders vs Minnesota United (02.55)

The second match of the evening is a repeat of the 2020 Western Conference final as the Seattle Sounders host Minnesota United and if this one is half as dramatic as their clash at the end of last season is anything to go by then we should be in for a cracking contest.

Minnesota are my idea of the winners of the competition this season and they have an immediate chance to lay down their credentials here against a Seattle side who are perennial slow starters to a season and that might be even more the case here while they look to work an attacking unit without Jordan Morris. In saying that, Minnesota have turned a lot of players over in the close season so they might need a game or two themselves to settle down a little. This is one to watch rather than bet on for me.
