Big Matches
We have to wait until the second match of the weekend for the TV action to commence but when it does it will see LA Galaxy looking to continue their decent start to the season when they play host to the new boys Austin FC, who themselves have begun promisingly. When they are done the focus moves to the Eastern Conference where the current leaders CF Montreal will look to remain in top spot when they travel to take on Atlanta United. The last of the televised matches comes from PayPal Park where the San Jose Earthquakes will look to bounce back from their midweek loss when they host the Portland Timbers.
Best of the Rest
The action actually begins at Yankee Stadium where New York City host a Toronto FC side who will be buoyed by beating the champions in midweek. Speaking of champions, the Supporters Shield holders Philadelphia Union are on show when they host the New York Red Bulls in an appealing Eastern Conference clash before the attention switches over to the West as Minnesota United take on FC Dallas, Colorado Rapids play host to Houston Dynamo and Real Salt Lake meet Nashville SC.
Betting
I’m going to go with just the one bet over the course of the evening, one which comes in the final match on the card as the San Jose Earthquakes take on the Portland Timbers in a match where predictably I’m expecting goals. I’ll come onto the statistics of why I’m expecting goals shortly but the first thing to note is that the Timbers have something of a goalkeeper crisis heading into this match with their first two choices Steve Clark and Jeff Attinella out injured and the third choice is inexperienced and looked out of his depth when he came on last week.
That is likely to add to the goal potential in this match but we might not need any help if you go by the expected goals that the San Jose Earthquakes are putting up this term. Their lowest xG rating this season has been 1.3 and they have 10 goals in their opening five matches. You would expect the Quakes to score here not just because of the goalkeeper situation but actually the chances the Timbers cough up. Their last two xGA totals were 2.0 and 2.3 so teams are getting good chances against them. On the other side they have recorded xG counts of 2.7 and 1.7 among their four matches so chances should come regularly. That makes me think over 3 goals is the play here.
