MLS 2023 – LA Galaxy vs Los Angeles FC Tips and Betting Preview

There is one match left in what has been another high scoring round of action in the MLS 2023 season and it is probably the biggest clash in MLS right now as LA Galaxy host the champions Los Angeles FC in the first ‘El Trafico’ of the campaign.

Generally when these two are on the pitch against each other we are treated to an epic contest and given that the gap between the two looks to be widening it will be interesting to see if this one lives up to that or whether the LAFC dominance is there for all to see.

Where to watch

The match will be shown live and in full on the Apple TV app. This is a free match for Apple TV subscribers so you don’t even need to subscribe to the MLS Season Pass to watch. It is also available with the bookmakers. Kick off is 9.30pm UK time.

LA Galaxy

Those who are not deep into MLS will probably associate the LA Galaxy as one of the biggest franchises in the competition but you wouldn’t believe it if you had followed their start to the season. To say it has been terrible would probably be doing it a disservice but there have been mitigating circumstances. The main one of those being the injury of Javier Hernandez which might well explain why they have only scored three goals in their opening six matches.

It will be a boost to Greg Vanney and the Galaxy ranks that the Mexican is expected to be available for the entirety of this match but now he has concerns at the other end of the pitch where he will be without experienced defender Martin Caceres who was sent off against Houston Dynamo last week. Galaxy are yet to win a match this season so they are going to need to release the shackles and have a good go at their city rivals if they are going to get anything from this match.

Los Angeles FC

We have seen over the last few seasons that the MLS Cup winners have struggled the following year. One reason for that is the way the league is shaped with the draft system and the turnover of player. Another is the Champions League campaign which clashes with the start of any MLS season. Los Angeles FC are not showing any signs of strain though. They have cruised into the semi-final of the Champions League and are unbeaten in MLS heading across Tinsel town.

LAFC have that good combination going where they are scoring plenty of goals and not really conceding many. All the attention on their side of Los Angeles usually comes around Carlos Vela but Denis Bouanga is the danger man at the minute and in great form. The depth of the LAFC squad is such that they look able to rotate where they need to in order to manage their way through the competitions. They will be heading into this match full of confidence.

Betting

I think if we used the form of the season so far, Los Angeles FC would be a surefire winner of this match, but this is ‘El Trafico’ and MLS and it might not necessarily be that easy. These matches are usually always competitive and I think this one will be too but what they also are is often very high scoring. That is a trend I expect to continue and the fact that LA Galaxy have had scoring woes this season means that we can get a low looking goal line for a match between these two.

If this is as uncompetitive as the starts the two have made to the season suggest that it could be then LAFC could easily score three themselves here. LA Galaxy have just shipped three to a much less vibrant and powered Houston Dynamo side and one thing we know in this fixture is there will be no letting up. I think we should assume that the appearance of Javier Hernandez will bring more out of the Galaxy in attacking areas so over 2.75 goals suits me here. 11 of the 15 MLS meetings between these two have had three or more goals, including their playoff clash last season, and I see no reason why that trend ends here.
