MLS 2023 – Saturday 9th August Matches Tips and Betting Preview

It might be the international weekend with the top leagues taking a break but the MLS 2023 campaign continues, albeit with a heavily reduced schedule with just four matches taking place on Saturday evening.

There might be a shortage of matches but that is a good thing if you want to watch them all as you won’t need too many devices. You will need an Apple TV MLS Season Pass subscription or access to a bookmaker live stream to watch them though.

Saturday’s fixtures are as follows: (00.30 unless stated)

D.C. United v San Jose Earthquakes

Inter Miami CF v Sporting Kansas City

Minnesota United FC v New England Revolution (01.30)

Portland Timbers v Los Angeles Football Club (03.30)

Preview

We begin the night with a couple of matches hosted by teams in the Eastern Conference and even though there is no Lionel Messi, who is away on international duty, all eyes will be on Inter Miami as they look to pick up three more points to assist them in their quest to reach the postseason. Sporting Kansas City need the points for the same reason though which should make for a good contest. DC United are clinging onto the final playoff spot in the East and they’ll look to keep hold of that spot when they host the San Jose Earthquakes.

We move to the homes of two Western Conference teams for the remainder of the evening. Minnesota United are looking for points to bolster their chances of being around for the postseason and they host a New England Revolution who sit second in the East going into the weekend. The last match to kick off might turn out to be the pick of them as the Portland Timbers get involved in a clash they can’t afford to lose when they host the champions Los Angeles FC at Providence Park.

Betting

Inter Miami are missing a number of stars for their match against Sporting Kansas City but in a strange way I think that doesn’t necessarily diminish the chances of goals in the game. While Miami would rather the likes of Lionel Messi, Robert Taylor, Josef Martinez and Benjamin Cremeschi weren’t on international duty, they do still have Leo Campana to lead the line and Facundo Farias was on the scoresheet against Los Angeles FC last weekend.

Why I think we’ll see some goals is Miami are without goalkeeper Drake Callender, who has been one of the best performing stoppers in MLS this season, while Serhiy Kryvtsov has been a reliable keeper. Sporting Kansas City aren’t really missing anyone which is a positive for them and their chances and they head to Florida in decent touch having won both matches since they returned to MLS action. This is a match that neither can afford to lose but a draw doesn’t really do much for either so I like over 2.5 goals in this one, a bet you’d have expected to land prior to the arrival of Messi and can still land in his absence.
