The Hundred 2022 – Northern Superchargers vs Manchester Originals Tips and Betting Preview

The Hundred continues on Sunday evening with what is a do or die rivalry clash between the Northern Superchargers and the Manchester Originals at Headingley as one team will give themselves a stronger chance to progress and the losers will be eliminated from the competition.

Both these teams have two wins from their opening give matches and so whoever loses here will be done for the year from a competitive viewpoint. The winners won’t be guaranteed a spot in the eliminator but will join the race for it.

Northern Superchargers

After three successive losses, and pretty tame ones at that, the Northern Superchargers deserve a lot of credit for their win over the Birmingham Phoenix last time out. They didn’t just become the first team to win at Edgbaston in either season of this competition but they did it when they had to else they could have been eliminated from proceedings. That should give them a lot of confidence to take into a match against the other side they have beaten this season.

The key to the success of the Superchargers was their power and brute force with the bat which put up a huge score even allowing for the dimensions of Edgbaston. That proved too much for the Phoenix to chase down but that was largely down to the way Faf du Plessis used his bowlers as well as the lines and lengths those bowling resources offered. If they can produce that sort of display with the ball here then they should be in business.

Manchester Originals

The Manchester Originals were in exactly the same position as the Superchargers when they went to the champions Southern Brave in their previous match. They did at least go there having won their previous one and now head to Headingley off the back of successive wins which will have given them a lot of confidence. In fairness to the Originals they haven’t played that badly all season but their bowlers in the opening three matches didn’t come to the party.

This is an Originals side which is full of talent with the bat and in the main they are all delivering the goods in their respective roles. We’ve seen the whole order come together throughout the innings a couple of times and you sense that will continue to happen so the success or otherwise of the Originals will be all down to whether their bowlers can continue to go well. They were found wanting against the Northern Superchargers at Old Trafford and will look to make up for that here.

Key Players

We saw the very best of Andre Russell at the Ageas Bowl and in what will be his final match for the Originals this season I am sure the Caribbean star will want to go out with a bang. This ground definitely isn’t big enough to contain him.

David Wiese displayed some clean hitting at Edgbaston, as he did here against the Trent Rockets earlier in the competition, and then bowled very nicely and a similar all-round performance would be welcomed here.

Betting

The sixes have been good to us in recent times and there is certainly no reason to desert them on one of the smallest grounds in the country which has one of the best batting pitches in the competition. There hasn’t been a match here for a week so there should have been plenty of time for the groundsman to prepare a decent wicket. Assuming that is the case these two teams look ideally suited to hitting a lot of sixes.

We just saw Jos Buttler, Andre Russell and to a lesser extent Phil Salt fill their boots at the Ageas Bowl and this ground is nowhere near as big as that. Northern Superchargers have gone big here and at Edgbaston and The Oval. I think these two attacks offer up the chance for teams to score big and when you consider Manchester just hit 11 with the likes of Laurie Evans and Tristan Stubbs barely getting to the crease while the Superchargers just hit 12 at Edgbaston with Harry Brook and David Willey facing six balls between them. The over looks an obvious but right play here.
