The Monday Night Football this week sees two of the most historic sides in the NFL colliding when the New York Giants travel to take on the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium to conclude a thrilling week 10 of the season.
This probably looked like a glamour fixture when the matches for the campaign were announced but it certainly doesn’t now. The pair have played 17 matches between them this term and have just three wins in that time.
San Francisco 49ers
You have to feel a little for the San Francisco 49ers this season. They will have had high hopes for the campaign going into it but then an early season ending injury to their quarterback Jimmy Garropolo who they gave up so much for has clearly derailed them. They go into this match with a 2-7 record and with no hope of being seeing January so they are just playing out time really.
San Francisco 49ers ended a six match losing streak last week when they took care of a pretty useless Oakland Raiders side and if they can pick up another win here then they can at least offer some sort of forward momentum towards the end of the season which they might be able to build on next term.
New York Giants
There can be no such excuses for the New York Giants. They haven’t had an injury issue to their quarterback, they just can’t protect him sufficiently and Eli Manning’s reluctance to explore down the field, or the lack of time to, is really holding an offense which actually has a fair number of playmakers on it back.
The Giants went into the bye week on a run of five successive defeats but with their season already all but done from a competitive standpoint, what they will have worked on in the break is open to debate. Scoring points would help. Only twice in their eight matches have they scored more than 20pts in a game. It is almost impossible to have a winning record in this league now if you can’t pile up the points.

Betting
I’m with San Francisco 49ers here. I just don’t have faith in the New York Giants putting up enough points to get the job done here. San Francisco might no longer have the pass rush of a few years ago but there is enough of one to keep Eli Manning honest and that might be all that is needed for them to come out on top.
There are enough playmakers in the San Francisco offense to move the Giants’ defence around and of course it is a Giants defence that has lost Eli Apple since it last played. That isn’t necessarily a good thing. Both sides should be pretty refreshed so there will be no excuses on that front so I’m expecting the better team to win. I’ll take San Fran to cover a field goal.
