The final match in the NFL on Sunday sees the playoff race in the AFC in focus as the Pittsburgh Steelers play host to the Buffalo Bills in a match that neither can afford to lose if they are going to keep their destiny in their own hands.
These two are currently projected to be the fifth and sixth seeds in the postseason so whoever wins this one will be in an excellent position to complete their season in January. The losers face a nervous denouement to the regular season.
Pittsburgh Steelers
It really would be a wonderful achievement if the Pittsburgh Steelers make it to the playoffs with all the adversity they have had to suffer this term in terms of key injuries and things. It would also highlight the coaching ability of Mike Tomlin, who himself has been questioned at times over the course of the campaign, even allowing for the personnel he had missing. Just to still be in contention is a recognisable feat.
The Steelers are 8-5 for the campaign so a loss here has them just half a match ahead of the Tennessee Titans in the race for that final spot in the playoffs and with the Baltimore Ravens to come in the last match of the season their hopes really will be hanging by a thread. Seven of those wins have come in their last eight matches, and while they haven’t always been convincing offensively, you can never slaughter a team that is winning.

Buffalo Bills
This has been quite the campaign for the Buffalo Bills and if they were in a different division they could easily be hosting a playoff match. As it is though their 9-4 record is not touching the New England Patriots so the best they can hope for is that they win out and secure the number five seed and at least be travelling to the number four seed, who in theory will be the weakest of the divisional winners.
The Bills defence has stood the test of time this term. Only two sides have put up more than 21pts on it this season and one of those was the Baltimore Ravens whose 24pts was among the lowest totals they’ve put up. Their offense hasn’t been outstanding all year but there are signings it is warming up at the right time, so the Bills will head to Heinz Field with their confidence up. This will feel like a rehearsal for the playoffs so we’ll get a sign of their credentials here.
Betting
I’m expecting a right good old school defensive battle here. There is no doubt that both these sides are infinitely better in defence than offense right now and that is how I expect this one to be played out over the course of the four quarters. These two are ranked in the top five for defence this season so whichever way you look at this one points should be hard to come by, unless of course it is the defenders doing the scoring.
Buffalo will go into the match sat at 20 in scoring in the National Football League while Pittsburgh are three places lower than that, so if you are tuning in to watch one of these high scoring offensive classics that we often see these days you are likely to be disappointed. Avoid such disappointment though by getting stuck into under 37.5pts which sounds low but may well not be low enough.
