The NFL is back in London on Sunday and it has an early kick off as the New Spurs Stadium plays host to the big league for the second time in as many weeks. This time it stages a divisional game as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers take on the Carolina Panthers in the NFC South.
The Buccaneers head to London with a 2-3 record but they’ll go level with the Carolina Panthers who make the trip across the pond with a 3-2 ledger to their name. Both sides are looking to chase down the New Orleans Saints in the division and will be looking for a win here to assist that.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Consistency is the big issue surrounding the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the minute. Two weeks ago they stuck up a 50 burger on the Los Angeles Rams of all sides but either side of that they have lost to the New York Giants and the New Orleans Saints which is less than ideal. To be fair the loss to the Saints is understandable for the one to the G-Men is unforgivable for a side who should be having a winning record with their roster.
Defence is the big area to improve on for the Buccaneers, although that looked like that would be the case when the campaign begun. They have shipped 30+ points in four of their five matches, although they probably don’t need reminding that the other time was against the opponent they face in London. On the flip side, the Bucs have put up at least 24pts in their last three matches so they are firing on offense at least.
Carolina Panthers
It has been a strange season for the Carolina Panthers. I say that because in the two games that Cam Newton started they went 0-2 and the three games that he has been out injured and Kyle Allen has been performing the trigger duties they are 3-0. You would have thought that would be the other way around. To be fair to Allen he has a quarterback rating of 107.4 which isn’t too shabby and he has already formed a decent partnership with his key offensive weapons.
They have run the ball well this season with Christian McCaffrey, who could reach 1,000 all-purpose yards in this match which after six games is pretty incredible. Carolina have put up more than 30pts in two of their last three matches and are looking like the side we would expect them to be. In an ideal world they would tighten up on defence but there is plenty of time for that to happen this season.
Betting
Conditions aren’t expected to be fantastic in London on Sunday but despite that I still can’t help but think that the point line is a touch on the low side at 47. It might be skewed because of the 20-14 win for Tampa Bay Buccaneers when these two first met this season but that was on a Thursday night which always distorts things, and was at a time when the Carolina Panthers offense just couldn’t get going.
Both these offenses have been firing on all cylinders in recent weeks and perhaps just as importantly both their defences have been letting big plays happen to them and surrendering points as a result. Both teams will be heading to London to win and both have good offensive threats. I fancy both offenses will get it done here to ensure we go beyond the 47pt line.
