The Monday Night Football this week sees Odell Beckham Jr going back to the MetLife Stadium as his Cleveland Browns side head to the Big Apple to take on the New York Jets in a clash which sees two teams looking to rebound from poor results last week.
There was plenty of optimism around the Cleveland Browns heading into the campaign so a heavy loss to Tennessee wasn’t expected. The Jets put up a much better fight against the Buffalo Bills but suffered a pivotal divisional loss.
New York Jets
When they went 16-0 up, somewhat against the odds, the Jets would have expected to have gone on and beaten the Buffalo Bills last week but they let them back into the match and paid the price. It was the Jets defence which did the business for them last week with an inception being returned for a touchdown so they will need a much changed offense to come to the party over the coming weeks if they are to better their poor campaign last year.
That might not happen in this match though as starting quarterback Sam Darnold has been ruled out of this match with illness. That said his record as starter isn’t fantastic so maybe the Jets will benefit from his extra experience here. If the defence continues to play tough, although losing linebacker CJ Mosley to injury is no help in that, then the offense shouldn’t have to do too much. In Le’Veon Bell and Demaryius Thomas they have two very good offensive options if fit while the likes of Jamison Crowder and Ryan Griffin can be useful.
Cleveland Browns
It was a pretty rough first week for the Cleveland Browns. After all the hype and positivity surrounding them going into the season they crashed and burned right out of the starting gate. Expectation is a funny thing. Everyone wants it but not everyone can handle it. With that in mind it might not be a bad thing that the Browns go on the road for this one, just to get away from the scrutiny, although primetime matches come with their own profile and pressure.
The Cleveland defence did not have a good game last week and so they should be out to prove their worth a little more here. Baker Mayfield has a lot on his shoulders this week too. He has no excuses with regards to a lack of weapons or anything now so it is on him to deliver better ball games than the one he offered last week. With Pittsburgh Steelers losing a big player on Sunday the AFC North is wide open for someone to grab it.
Betting
When Sam Darnold was slotted to play in this match the New York Jets were only getting 2.5 points but the line has moved out to 6.5 since his absence was confirmed but for all his talent and the belief that he’ll be a good quarterback for them, the results aren’t yet suggesting that is the case currently so I’m happy to go with the Jets on that line.
They look to have a solid unit as a whole and while the Cleveland Browns are probably better man for man and should win this match, something looked to be missing for them last week. If the Jets get ahead in this game I’ll be interested to see what the character is like for the Browns as there wasn’t much of it last week. I think there are more questions about Cleveland at the minute so I’ll ride the Jets’ 6.5pt head start.
