The NFL season is rattling along at a right old rate and on Thursday night we begin week 10 of the campaign with another divisional clash as the Oakland Raiders play host to the Los Angeles Chargers in a key AFC West matchup.
Both these sides have flattered to deceive at times this season and looked good at other periods and with the Kansas City Chiefs leading the way in the division, both will know this is a contest they can ill afford to lose.
Oakland Raiders
The Raiders go into the contest with a 4-4 record for the season but their inconsistency can be highlighted by the fact they have not won more than two straight games all season. I guess such an up and down trend can be expected given the youthful nature of the side, especially in some key offensive positions, but at the same time there needs to be an improvement all the time. The win over Detroit last week which snapped a two game losing streak suggests they are going in the right direction.
One of the issues they have had has been defensively. They have conceded 24pts or more in six of their eight matches, which is asking a lot of a young offense. Running back Josh Jacobs is looking like a fine prospect, which is very much a positive, and with draft picks to burn in the upcoming selections the foundations are in place of a good team by the time the Raiders leave California for the bright lights of Las Vegas.
Los Angeles Chargers
The Los Angeles Chargers are slightly behind the Oakland Raiders in the AFC West but they head across California off the back of two successive wins and even though they are 4-5 for the campaign, they have a positive point difference which suggests when they win they do it well and when they lose it is by a narrow margin. We are used to the Chargers making a late surge for the playoffs and those statistics suggest they shouldn’t be ruled out just yet.
The Chargers defence has come to the party in the last two matches where they have shipped just 27pts and with Melvin Gordon starting to warm up after missing the beginning of the season and a couple of dodgy matches and he could take them to the next level. They are up against it here though because it is never easy to win on the road in these Thursday matches so they could send out a message if they come out on top here.
Betting
Although it is never easy to win on the road on Thursday nights, it isn’t like this one is a long distance trip so I’m still inclined to think the Los Angeles Chargers will come out on top here. The reason I think that is I believe their defence is more reliable and can be taken to get the better of the Oakland offense over the course of the night.
The Chargers are warming up offensively themselves and their win over Green Bay last week was one which laid down a real marker and gives me the belief they are just clicking into gear. If I’m honest the prices are about right but you still get paid out on the winner and at 4/5 I’m happy to side with that victor to be the Chargers.
