The Monday Night Football this week focuses on the race for the NFC East title when the Philadelphia Eagles host the New York Giants in a match which is simply huge for the home side as they look to make the playoffs.
With the way the NFC is situated in terms of the sides going well in other divisions, the Eagles know the only way to extend their campaign is via winning their division and they will go half a match between the Dallas Cowboys with a win here, ahead of the two sides meeting in two weeks. The Giants are playing for pride.
Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles haven’t helped themselves in recent weeks. The Cowboys have left the door open to the top spot in the division but repeatedly the Eagles have slammed it shut on themselves again. They have lost their last three matches and while defeats to New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks can be excused, there is no defending a loss to the Miami Dolphins. Anything but a win here and you would think Philadelphia are making up the numbers.
Doug Pedersen’s side just can’t find a complete performance, which is part of their problems. They are either very effective defensively but offer little on offense or when they do turn up and perform strongly on offense they get found out defensively. There is no reason why they can’t deliver a strong all-round display here, and if they do they should win the match and build some confidence that way.
New York Giants
There are many teams in the NFL that look something of a mess at the present time but I’m not so sure that any of them are worse than the New York Giants. There is something fundamentally wrong with them. Admittedly injuries have hurt them hard this term but they go into this match off the back of an eight game losing streak and that simply isn’t good enough for a team with the players they have.
They are going to be able to build again in the draft next season, but they still need to offer something competitive over the next four weeks. A side like the Giants simply can’t fold and end the campaign 2-14. The issue they need to resolve is offensively where they do not put up nearly enough points. In saying that, their defence is leaving a lot to be desired as well. In their last five matches only the Chicago Bears haven’t scored 30+ against them.
Betting
Given that this New York Giants defence has been horrible for the last couple of months I’m going to take the Philadelphia Eagles to feast on it. If I am honest I would have taken the Eagles to cover the spread in this one but I’m wary that Eli Manning has a point to prove with his first start at quarterback since September, so even if they are getting beat he could be eager to get a garbage time score or two.
That might mean the safest way to play the match is to take Philadelphia Eagles to put up more than 26.5pts, something four of the last five opponents have done against the Giants, including inferiors sides to the Eagles such as the Detroit Lions and the New York Jets. Even relatively low scoring Buffalo Bills covered this line against the Giants earlier in the campaign so Carson Wentz and his offense should be reaching 27pts at least here.
