There are four matches left in the NFL regular season for the 30 teams who did not play on Thursday night, the first of which come for 26 of them in the early set of games on Sunday, with wins highly relevant with fixtures beginning to run out.
We were guaranteed top notch action in the bulk of the week 14 matches given the tightly bunched nature of the race for the playoffs, but we have three of the best of the campaign to enjoy on a decent night of American Football.
1pm Kick Offs (6pm UK time)
As ever we have a televised match in both kick off slots on Sunday, and in the first of them we see two of the best in the NFC colliding in a match which could go some way to determining the outcome of the number one seed in the Conference as the New Orleans Saints host the San Francisco 49ers. As well as that we have four divisional matches with the Atlanta Falcons hosting the Carolina Panthers in the NFC South, Cleveland Browns take on the Cincinnati Bengals in the battle of Ohio in the AFC North, Detroit Lions head to the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC North and the New York Jets take on their AFC East rivals Miami Dolphins.
Three other matches take place in this kick off slot over the course of the piece. The biggest one of them is the battle of two of the better sides in the AFC when the Buffalo Bills take on the Baltimore Ravens. Elsewhere, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers go up against the Indianapolis Colts and the Houston Texans meet the Denver Broncos in another match that carries a good deal of intrigue to it.
4.05/4.25pm Kick Offs (9.05/9.25pm UK time)
We have a televised match in this kick off slot as well and it is a repeat of the AFC Championship match from last season as the New England Patriots host the Kansas City Chiefs in what promises to be a very tasty contest indeed, especially as the Patriots could be down in second spot in the Conference standings going into the match.
Three matches take place elsewhere with the big one coming in California as the Oakland Raiders go up against the Tennessee Titans in a match which could be huge in the race for the wildcard spots in the AFC. Jacksonville Jaguars meet the Los Angeles Chargers in another match, with the final one seeing the Pittsburgh Steelers heading to the desert to face up to the Arizona Cardinals.
Betting
I’ll go with a couple of bets over the afternoon and early evening and they both come in the two TV matches, beginning in New Orleans where I’m expecting the match between the New Orleans Saints and the San Francisco 49ers to be a fairly low scoring one between two of the best defences in the league. Both these sides also have vibrant offenses but their defences have really shone this year. Although they have good offenses, New Orleans have stuttered a little in that department in the second half of the season and the 49ers are absolutely bashed up on it with some huge performers while likely to play, will be carrying knocks into battle with them. The point line here is 44.5 which given how well the San Francisco defence in particular is playing just looks a little high to me.
In the other live match I am going to take Sony Michel to run for more than 59.5 yards against the Kansas City Chiefs. There is a lot to like about the Chiefs this season but their run defence is not one of them and they are regularly gashed against tams who ground it and pound it. I would expect a balanced offensive approach from the New England Patriots but it isn’t going to need a lot for Michel to go beyond 60 yards here. Even if he only averages four yards a carry you would think he would get the 15 carries needed to deliver the goods here. He has that many or more in eight of the Patriots’ 13 games this season with two of the five he didn’t coming in losing efforts. This line looks nice enough for him to cover against the third worst run defence in the league.
