The penultimate week of the NFL regular season began with three excellent matches on Saturday evening and hopefully we will get a lot more on Sunday when the majority of the games are played out across the country.
Everyone knows the drill by now. We have two kick off slots with a bunch of matches in each as well as a TV game in the UK and with spots in the playoffs and division titles at stake it should be a good night to sit in and enjoy the action.
1pm Kick Offs (6pm UK time)
It is the chase for seedings and playoff spots that will be the focus of attention in the TV game in this kick off slot with the New Orleans Saints heading to the Tennessee Titans. The Saints need to win and rely on someone slipping up to get a first round bye while Tennessee Titans need to win out and hope that the Pittsburgh Steelers lose somewhere to make it into the playoffs. There are a couple of divisional battles in this slot too with the Baltimore Ravens looking to continue their push for the number one seed in the AFC when they head to the Cleveland Browns. Washington Redskins host the New York Giants in the NFC East.
There are four other matches and the biggest of them involves the Pittsburgh Steelers, who know that if they win their final two matches they will be the last two into the playoffs in the AFC. The first of those comes away to the New York Jets, while elsewhere the Miami Dolphins welcome the Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts take on the Carolina Panthers and the Atlanta Falcons host the Jacksonville Jaguars in a clash of two sides who are 5-9 for the season.
4.05/4.25pm Kick Offs (9.05/9.25pm UK time)
The race for the NFC East title is the attention grabber in the second slot of matches when the Philadelphia Eagles host the Dallas Cowboys. Whoever comes out on top in this match will know they only need to win their last game to win the division and claim the number four seed in the NFC. The losers will lose all control of their own destiny so everything is on the line in this one so understandably this is the TV game.
There are three other matches on this card, two of which are divisional battles. The Oakland Raiders head to the Los Angeles Chargers in one of them while the Seattle Seahawks will hope to set up a winner-takes-all contest against San Francisco 49ers for the NFC West title next week. They host the Arizona Cardinals with the other match seeing the Denver Broncos taking on the Detroit Lions in a clash with little on it.
Betting
I’ll go with one bet on Sunday night and it comes in the real big clash in the NFC East where I like the Philadelphia Eagles. There has been little that has been convincing about the Dallas Cowboys in recent times and although they overpowered the LA Rams last week, I’m still not as convinced as I would want to be about a side who are historically quite tame at this time of year.
You could probably argue that Philadelphia are no great shakes either hence why they are 7-7 for the season but they have at least won their last two matches when they have known that defeat is not an option and that should stand them in good stead here. I get why Philadelphia are the outsiders here but with home advantage and winning momentum I’m going to take them to come out on top in this huge clash.
