We have reached week four of the NFL season already and it starts in the Big Apple as the New York Jets host the Denver Broncos at MetLife Stadium in a match which has both sides under untold pressure even this early in the campaign.
Both teams go into the match 0-3 for their season so their hopes of doing anything significant this term will all but end should they lose this one. Throw in a mountain of injuries to both units and there is an intriguing edge to this one.
New York Jets
The New York Jets weren’t expected to do a whole lot going into the season but even with their injuries I think people thought they would offer up a little more than what they have done to date. Their last match was probably their worst with Sam Darnold throwing a couple of pick sixes and they need him to put that behind him and come up with the goods if they are to get out of the slump they are currently in. For all the fact that there are injuries to the offense, the quarterback playing below par on top never helps.
It is a fair excuse that the Jets are missing players such as Le’Veon Bell and Jamison Crowder among others but to be the worst team in the league on offense is a stalk indictment of where they are as a team and you’ve got to think if they suffer another heavy defeat here that will be the end of head coach Adam Gase. We will see if his he has it in him to motivate this team, although on a national stage the players who are available shouldn’t really need much motivating.

Denver Broncos
There was a lot of talk in the off season that the Denver Broncos could be dark horses this season. The extra place in the play-offs was potentially to their advantage but that all went out of the window when injuries started to hit and now it is a case of rescuing something from the campaign even this early in the piece. There is no hiding the fact that injuries have hit hard. When a side is without its starting quarterback and elite pass rusher it is naturally going to struggle.
The Broncos don’t even have their second choice quarterback available here so they have a real issue in that position. It is expected that this choice trigger man Brett Rypien is expected to make the first start of his career and what a stage it will be to do it in. The undrafted quarterback will be hoping that Philip Lindsay is fit to play so that he has a running game to utilise to lead his side into the game before it falls on him to make the key plays.
Betting
I suspect this isn’t going to be a pretty game to watch and I’m expecting it to be a struggle for both sides but in the end I’ve got to side with the more established quarterback rather than the man who is making his first start. Perhaps if there was a little hype behind Rypien even as an undrafted quarterback then that would be fair enough but there isn’t so even though Sam Darnold has not played well recently I’ve got to think that he and his New York Jets side can get the job done here.
The other thing to factor in when betting on this match is the quarterback problem that the Broncos have had this week will have delivered a fair amount of upheaval on a normal week let alone on a short one. That short week is always significant. We see that time and again so although the Jets haven’t pulled up any trees they have a lot more going for them here and chuck home advantage into the mix as well and I’ll take the home side here.
