The opening match of the new NFL season takes place at Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night when the defending champions Kansas City Chiefs host the Houston Texans to kick off their title defence in an eagerly anticipated match up.
With no pre-season matches taking place this is the first NFL match of any kind since the Super Bowl last season, with the Kansas City Chiefs hoping for a similar result than the one they secured on that occasion. The Texans will be playing the role of the spoiler.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to blaze a trail through the schedule this season, much in the same way that they have in the last two campaigns. They are now the hunted side all of a sudden so it will be interesting to see how they handle that tag. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is now the highest paid player in football as well so he carries a bounty on his back. All eyes will be on him to see if his intensity remains the same as before his new deal was signed.
We know the Chiefs are going to put plenty of yards and points on the board on offense but the keys to this one will be how they deal with a reduced crowd at Arrowhead Stadium, one of the louder venues in the NFL, and also how their defence performs. This might not be quite as potent a in seasons gone by but they won’t want to let them remain in the game. All that being said, if KC play like they can they should have too much here.

Houston Texans
It has been a long few months for the Houston Texans, not helped by one or two very strange decisions to say the least. The biggest one of those was obviously the decision to offload DeAndre Hopkins, considered by many as the best receiver in the game, and replace him with Brandin Cooks and Randall Cobb. While they get two receivers overall they lose the skills of one of the best in that position which feels a bizarre move.
It remains to be seen what that does for the Texans’ offense but the chances are they are going to need to put up quite a few points if they are going to get anything out of this match. It will be interesting to see if the renowned pass rush from the Texans can get any pressure on Mahomes. If they can somehow contain him as much as possible it would take some of the pressure off of their offense which would help the cause.
Betting
I’ve been undecided over whether to take the Kansas City Chiefs on the handicap or the over and I’m siding in the direction of the latter. The line for this match is 51.5pts which just feels low especially with the Chiefs likely to put up more than 30 on their own unless they are completely misfiring. There has been a lot of negative talk about the Houston Texans offense, and while I understand why, I’m not completely convinced it will be as bad as is being made out.
Both these teams can be attacked down the field and that is never a bad thing for the over. They also have running backs that can punch the ball in from inside the red zone which certainly doesn’t do an over any harm. These two met in that crazy postseason game last season which finished 51-31 and while I’m not expecting to see 82 points again, it does show the potential for them being scored. I like over 51.5 here.
