The new revamped playoffs system in the NFL has given us a wonderful Super Wildcard weekend to enjoy with six matches coming over two days with a couple of tasty triple headers to get stuck into. That begins on Saturday evening when the Buffalo Bills host the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC.
The Bills are the highest seed competing in the AFC this weekend and will be looking to continue their fine regular season form but the Colts have the personnel to be dangerous and put pressure on the home side so this should be a cracker.
Buffalo Bills
In a normal season the 13-3 record that the Buffalo Bills put together would be enough to claim the number one seed in the AFC but there is nothing normal about the Kansas City Chiefs these days so Josh Allen and his men will have to play the extra match if they are going to make it to the Super Bowl. The first of those matches comes here where they are under pressure to pick up what would have to be described as a rare playoffs win.
You have to go back to 1995 for the last time the Bills won a match in the playoffs and having only played five postseason games since then it is clear to see how rare their appearance at this stage of a campaign is. Quarterbacks are judged on playoff wins so Allen will be eager to get his first playoff win here. He certainly has the offense to do that. That side of the ball looks to be getting better as the season goes on so if their defence can muscle up and compete the Bills are worthy favourites.

Indianapolis Colts
The Indianapolis Colts have done well to make it into the postseason with their 10-5 record very creditable. They might feel disappointed to be having to travel in the first week of the playoffs though as they were a few seconds away from winning the division last week which would have seen them hosting the Baltimore Ravens instead. The Colts can’t dwell on any disappointment that might have come from that though as they have a daunting task on their hands.
One thing they have on their side is experience. Philip Rivers hasn’t pulled up any trees at quarterback in his debut season for the Colts but he hasn’t done a lot wrong and he has had many postseason campaigns in the past. The Colts have a decent run game and enough playmakers defensively to make life awkward for the Bills here. The one thing Indianapolis have to do is make sure they are clinical on offense in case this does turn into a shootout.
Betting
I’ve a feeling this will be a closer match than the bookmakers suggest. The Buffalo Bills should win and they should win it reasonably comfortably but playoff wins are rare in that part of the world and Josh Allen wouldn’t be the first quarterback weighed down by the pressure of expectation at this stage of a campaign. The Indianapolis Colts tempted me with a pretty decent start on their side but I prefer to take a player prop instead.
That comes on the Colts’ quarterback Philip Rivers who has a passing yards line of 266.5 yards which I feel might be on the high side. You’ve got to think that the Colts will be looking to run the ball and keep their offense on the field for as long as possible and with Jonathan Taylor impressing recently there is every chance they will keep feeding him for as long as they are in the game. I don’t get the impression that the Colts will be looking for the deep passes so even if Rivers does throw the ball it will be a lot of short passing options. This line just looks a touch high to me.
