NFL 2021 – Las Vegas Raiders @ Los Angeles Chargers Tips and Betting Preview

There is one more match left in the NFL this week and it comes from California where the Los Angeles Chargers host the Las Vegas Raiders in an AFC West battle in the Monday Night Football, one which could define the season of both teams.

The Raiders head to Hollywood undefeated from the first three weeks of the season while the Chargers have a 2-1 winning record so two of the better teams in the AFC so far battle it out for the last win of the week.

Los Angeles Chargers

After a couple of weeks of the season it wasn’t necessarily easy to know what to make of the Los Angeles Chargers. I say that because in their opening week win over the Washington Football Team, Ryan Fitzpatrick exited the game early on for their opponents and then they were beaten by the Dallas Cowboys in week two of the season. Any doubts or confirmation over whether they could be a side that challenges for honours came last week though when they beat the Kansas City Chiefs, a win they’ll be looking to build on and go 2-0 for the division through four weeks.

Justin Herbert showed all his quality last week and actually when you think back to the week before he played an excellent game against the Dallas Cowboys but consistent penalties cost the Chargers dear. Their defence is beginning to warm to the task as well and if they can stop the run here and get some pressure on the quarterback then that side of the ball might do enough for Herbert to pick out his exciting set of receivers to win the game for the home side.

Las Vegas Raiders

If you had the Las Vegas Raiders down for making a 3-0 start to the season you are either a diehard member of the Raider Nation or you struck lucky because with a clash with the Baltimore Ravens and a trip to the Pittsburgh Steelers their first two assignments there won’t have been many outside of Vegas who saw this start coming. That doesn’t mean that those who want to doubt the Raiders don’t feel they have a reason to do so. They needed overtime to beat a bashed up Ravens and the win at Pittsburgh doesn’t look particularly great. Even last week’s overtime win over the Miami Dolphins has all sorts of questions attached to it.

The positive for the Raiders is that their offense has been firing nicely this season. Derek Carr is playing to a high level and he has a number of receivers who are in great form, both for the short and medium range passes and the deep ball. The problem is their defence which has done well enough to make enough plays to win three matches but the way that the Miami Dolphins were able to move the ball through the air against them would certainly be a concern, especially when facing a classy operator here.

Betting

This is one of those matches where I like the home side to win but I wouldn’t be surprised if it is like the Sunday game where a field goal attempt late on decides the game. That makes me less enamoured to back the Los Angeles Chargers because the spread is 3.5pts as opposed to the 3 which would get us a refund on a field goal win. With that in mind, I’ll go with the other bet which looks fairly obvious which comes in the form of the total points.

You can get 5/6 on an over 50.5 points bet and that looks good to me. The Chargers have shown they can go down the field at will this season and as long as they don’t shoot themselves in the foot with penalties in the red zone I fancy Los Angeles will put up plenty of points against this Raiders defence. Carr has enough receivers and offensive weapons for the Raiders to put up points as well so you’ve got to think that a 27-24 sort of match is well in the pipeline if not a little higher than that. I like the over in this one.
