The second match of the three in the NFL 2022 season on Christmas Day takes us to Hollywood where the Denver Broncos and the current champions Los Angeles Rams play out what is nothing more than a dead rubber for both teams.
Both sides head into this match with a 4-10 record for their season and there is no route into the postseason from that position, so other than a look ahead to next term there is no competitive edge on this one at all.
Los Angeles Rams
Having climbed to the top of the mountain last season, the Los Angeles Rams wanted to emulate that with another deep run this season but that clearly isn’t going to happen. This has been a terrible season compared to the one they put together last term. Admittedly it was always going to be harder with some key players having left or retired and then a whole heap of injuries have only compounded that problem.
The Rams’ offense has had all sorts of issues and they continued last week. Baker Mayfield has been brought in to show if he can be useful going forward and he led them to a win over the Las Vegas Raiders a couple of weeks ago but he was also easily contained by the Green Bay Packers last week. The Rams’ defence has looked a lot weaker since Aaron Donald went down injured and while you can’t say Los Angeles are starting to tank their season, they do look like a wounded team.

Denver Broncos
This was expected to be the year that the Denver Broncos improved beyond trace and challenged for a spot at the Super Bowl. That was the plan on paper but the reality has turned out to be anything but that and now they are left planning for that to happen next year. At no stage have Denver found any consistency and what will have frustrated them as much as their own performances and results is the fact the AFC West hasn’t been as collectively good as it was expected to be.
It isn’t all doom and gloom for the Broncos. Their defence this season has been performing to elite levels so if they can maintain that form next term then they only need to come good on one side of the ball. Russell Wilson was brought in to take the offense to whole new levels and while that has happened, it has been the opposite end of the scale to what they were expecting. Their offensive output has been very ordinary and that will need to change ahead of next season.
Betting
I think it is fair to say that if you are looking for an offensively elite game you’ll be watching the wrong one here. These are two stuttering offenses and while there are signs of life within the Denver Broncos after last week, we still need to see them do it under Russell Wilson before we can assume it is going to happen. We also need to see them do it on the road as well. The Rams showed signs of life two weeks ago under Baker Mayfield but were very ordinary offensively last week.
As well as stuttering offenses, we have a couple of defences, one of which is elite and able to put stops on if not at will then certainly when it counts while the Rams’ defence probably won’t be tested as fully as it might be and even if they are they have seen plenty of Russell Wilson in his Seattle days to know how to deal with him and contain him. That makes me think the kickers are going to have a big role to play here and at odds against over 3.5 field goals is the way forward in this one.
