Another week of NFL 2022 action kicks off in the traditional manner with the Thursday Night Football, which after last week Amazon could probably do with being a classic but with two of the worse teams in the league meeting when Chicago Bears take on the Washington Commanders, they might not get their wish.
These two have just three wins between them in the 10 matches they have played so at least they go into this one knowing they can’t afford to take another loss, which might just offer up a competitive game, but there is little evidence there will be much quality.
Chicago Bears
The Chicago Bears head into this match with a 2-3 record to their name. They lost last week but in a weird way they might have come out of the defeat to the Minnesota Vikings feeling as good about themselves as they have done all season. That is because we finally got to see the best of Justin Fields. Bears fans and the hierarchy will be hoping that wasn’t a one-off but rather the start of a regular improvement to the quarterback he was expected to be when he was drafted.
Another thing which will give the Bears a bit of confidence going into this match is the fact that both their wins have been at home this season while their three defeats have all been on the road. Their first win was in atrocious conditions against the San Francisco 49ers and then their second was against the Houston Texans. Unfortunately two of their three defeats were to fellow NFC North teams so already a play-off spot is looking tough to achieve.

Washington Commanders
If a postseason spot is looking tough for the Chicago Bears to get then it is looking almost impossible for the Washington Commanders. They have been left behind in the NFC East and already look like they’ll need a wildcard and with a 1-4 record they are likely to need to win nine of their last 12 matches to get anywhere near that, and even then that might not be enough. In essence, their season is already over so another defeat here could have major repercussions in the key spots within the franchise.
Washington won their opening match of the season, although that victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars hasn’t really worked out how it might have done. They have lost four straight since then and in the last three of those have managed a combined total of 35 points. They have a quarterback in Carson Wentz who can’t keep hold of the football and on the occasions he does passes it to the opposition and they have a secondary that is getting gashed by the game. It isn’t a good combination, especially on a short week.
Betting
This probably isn’t going to be a classic match but someone is likely to win it and I think there is enough to suggest that that it will be the Chicago Bears who do that. I never like to take the road team on a Thursday night, especially one who have issues to address as they never get enough time to do it and I suspect that will be the problem for the Washington Commanders. They need to fix their secondary issues but the evidence so far this season is that it will be no quick fix.
The other problem they have got is their quarterback can’t seem to keep hold of the football so it might be that Justin Fields just needs to have a clean game to lead the Bears to victory here. He is getting more and more receiving options back whereas Wentz is without a couple of key options of his own, and he is said to be playing banged up a bit. The Bears haven’t been far from being a competent side whereas Washington look right off that at the minute so I’ll take the Bears on home soil off a short week here.
