We have reached week six of the NFL 2023 season and it gets underway as ever with the Thursday Night Football which takes us to Arrowhead Stadium this time around when the Kansas City Chiefs continue their title defence against AFC West rivals Denver Broncos.
These two teams have very opposite records with the Chiefs opening up with four wins from their five matches while the Broncos have four losses from their first five games. The odds would suggest those patterns will continue in this one.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs began their title defence with a narrow defeat to the Detroit Lions but they haven’t looked back since that night and have picked up four successive wins and are looking like the team we are accustomed to seeing them be. Those four wins have been full of points, eye catching offensive plays and now they are looking like the side who are going to go on and dominate the AFC once again this term.
The appealing thing for the Chiefs this season is they are 4-1 and they have had to manage the game time of key offensive weapon Travis Kelce so when he is fully fit they have even more to come from them. Defensively the Chiefs have been much improved this term and Patrick Mahomes isn’t getting knocked over quite as often either. We are used to Kansas City swatting all aside in the regular season and they’ll be expected to do that again here.

Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos have made a shambolic start to the season and even saw their new coach and his words haunt them last week. They have won one of their opening five matches but they had to come from a country mile down to win in that so they could easily be going into this one 0-5 for the year. Much more was expected of the Broncos once Sean Payton arrived as head coach. He and Russell Wilson were touted to turn the Denver fortunes around but that hasn’t happened.
The big problem the Broncos are having is defensively and that isn’t exactly a good omen when you consider what they are up against here. In five matches this season Denver have conceded 181 points and when you are averaging 36.2 points against you, you are not going to win many matches. To be fair they have put up 121 points in those five matches so it isn’t as though their offense is struggling but whether it is the run or the pass their defence just can’t stop teams scoring on them.
Betting
You have to fear for the Denver Broncos in this match. They are shipping a stupid amount of points despite their last two matches being against the Chicago Bears and the New York Jets, hardly the most potent of offenses. This Kansas City Chiefs one has the potential to be ridiculous on offense and that can be the case regardless of the fitness and status of Travis Kelce, who at the time of writing is actually expected to play.
I expect to see plenty of points in this match. The point line is 46.5 for this one which if the Chiefs want to they could cover this one on their own, or certainly get to within a score of it. On a short week the Denver defence, which got gassed by a huge running back in Breece Hall on Sunday, could tire quite quickly. I do fancy Denver to offer something to the scoreboard though and a 38-10 sort of game would be a minimum I’d expect but I wouldn’t be surprised if Denver put up more than that. Whoever does the scoring, on a short week I expect the points to flow in this one.
