Everything is on the line in the second game of the Christmas Day NFL double header as the Kansas City Chiefs host the Denver Broncos in an all or nothing AFC West battle. Oakland will win the division if the Chiefs fail to win here while the champions Denver will be out of playoff contention if they lose this match. A Chiefs win will book a playoff spot so there is plenty to play for.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs suffered a surprising loss to the Tennessee Titans last week to end a three match winning streak and they will be out to put that behind them here. They can take confidence from the fact they have already defeated Denver this season in what was something of an epic contest and this one will probably be similar.
One man who has come alive for the Chiefs in recent weeks is the tight end Travis Kelce and Alex Smith will be looking for him to have another big match here. Tyreek Hill is another big player on offense but it is defensively where the Chiefs shine. Not only do they contain sides but they pick up plenty of points too which is vital.
Denver Broncos
Clearly this is a much different side to the one which won the Super Bowl last season. That might not be the case defensively where they still look as strong as ever but offensively they are completely different. Despite being coached by a coach renowned for running the ball the Broncos haven’t been able to get a ground game going and that has affected them badly.
Trevor Siemian has put up good numbers in recent weeks but the Broncos have now lost three of their last four matches and perhaps more worryingly is despite the number Siemian has put up Denver have only scored 13pts in the last two weeks. Admittedly they have played a couple of decent defences but they go up against one of them here too.
Betting
The common logic is that this will be a low scoring game but that goes against their recent meetings which have been quite high scoring recently including the match in Denver earlier in the season which went to overtime and ended 30-27 to Kansas City. That puts me off taking the unders on the points.
In the end I’ve decided to go with just the one bet in this match which is on the receiving yards of Travis Kelce. Kelce had a four game 100+ yards streak snapped last week but one of those 100 yard games was against the Broncos so it is surprising that we can get his line at 56.5 this week.
With Denver providing the pressure regularly Smith is going to need to find his tight end a few times and if he does find him Kelce should have plenty of running room. I expect him to go over that 56.5 yards and some.
