We’ve already got one bet continuing on Tuesday when the women’s 200m continues but in terms of bets for Tuesday I’m going to concentrate on the finals. I’m pretty sure I will bet on some of the other events as they near the final but nothing is standing out just yet.

Men’s Triple Jump

If the form of the year and the odds are anything to go by then this is a battle of the Americans for the gold medal. Christian Taylor is a 1/3 favourite and he looked awesome in qualifying. Will Claye is a 4/1 second favourite but it is hard to see beyond Taylor. If we needed any reminders about not ploughing into short favourites we got it in the pole vault on Monday night so I’ll leave this event alone.

Women’s Discus

The same outcome occurs in this event with a very short favourite who doesn’t look like getting beat. In all likelihood Sandra Perkovic is near enough a racing certainty but at 2/7 she’s not our sort of price so we’ll leave the morning finals along and head into the evening.

Men’s High Jump

In major championships gone by this event has really shone out as one of the best of the week and it has the potential to do the same thing here. Three men have dominated the scene this year. Gianmarco Tamberi, Mutaz Essa Barshim and Bohdan Bondarenko have been excellent all season but the former isn’t in this competition.

Robbie Grabarz is the British representative in this final. He has won a medal in a major championship in the past but in this company he will need something very special to follow that up but he looked in decent nick in qualifying which hopefully will count for something.

I think this will be a high quality competition but there isn’t enough between the top contenders to merit a bet. I nearly took the world champion Derek Drouin but I was hoping for more than 4/1 on him. This is an event to kick back and enjoy rather than bet on.

Men’s 110m Hurdles

The heats for this competition became a bit of a farce in the rain on Monday night so how much we can take from that remains to be seen. In terms of times on the year the 60m indoor champion Omar McLeod is going to take some beating. He was in the only counting heat before the rain on Monday so although he qualified fastest he did have an advantage.

I’m a little reluctant to take the Jamaican. He is a worthy favourite although I’m not so sure he is a 4/6 shot but this is his first Olympics and he hasn’t really shown anything in an outdoor games yet and that is a concern for anyone taking a cramped price about him.

Orlando Ortega is the second favourite for the event after a solid heat but I’m not convinced about him either while neither of the Americans have much experience on the big stage so this is an event which could have a big priced winner about it.

Pascal Martinot-Lagarde was fourth in the World Championship last year but that was a much stronger event than it looks now and none of the three men who beat him in Beijing are here so that bodes well for the Frenchman. He was runner up in the World Indoors earlier in the year so he hasn’t lost any of his ability and if he can come out quick and get the pressure on the more inexperienced racers he could take advantage and last home.

Women’s 1500m

This looks like a battle between the Kenyan and the Ethiopian with Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia favourite to beat her Kenyan rival Faith Chepngetich Kipyegon with the likes of Laura Muir and Sifan Hassan expected to chase them down for the minor medals.

I didn’t really see anything in the heats and semis to sway me either way on which way this final will go so at the prices I’m going to sit it out. I’m tempted to back Hassan to medal but she isn’t a clear standout third best so I’ll leave the race alone.
