The final match of the NFL regular season takes place in the Sunday Night Football this week and it will decide the NFC North title as the Detroit Lions host the Green Bay Packers. If Washington win earlier in the night then the loser of this match will be done for the season so everything is on the line here.
Detroit Lions
Having led for much of the season the Lions are now under pressure to maintain top spot in the NFC North. They have home advantage and they will hope to make full use of that but you would think if they are to win this match they will need to score a lot of points so their offense will need to be right at it here.
That brings the issue of Matt Stafford’s injury into play. It didn’t look to be hampering him too much last week despite the heavy loss to the Dallas Cowboys so that will be something but against a largely watertight Packers run defence it will be down to Stafford to get the job done here. Lions fans won’t need reminding their record against Green Bay isn’t the best.
Green Bay Packers
This season looked like being one to forget for the Packers when they were languishing with a 5-6 record. Everyone was circling in on Aaron Rodgers and his critics were getting louder. He answered that aggressively by stating he will ensure his side will win their last five matches and four matches later they are still on track to do that.
One more win here sees them into the playoffs and with the way Rodgers and Jordy Nelson have linked up in recent weeks the Cheeseheads will be heading to the Motor City in good spirits. The best sides always come alive in December and beyond and that is what Green Bay look to have done. They have scored 30pts or more in their last three matches so they have come good at the right time.
Betting
The Lions might have the home advantage here but I expect Green Bay Packers to win this match and win it by a fairly comfortable margin given the situation. I don’t think they are significantly weaker on defence than the Lions and Stafford’s injury gives the Packers’ offense a huge edge in the comparison of the offenses.
Green Bay are used to winning titles and have enough players with big game experience in their ranks and if this is win or bust for both sides then that experience can certainly come into play. I’m with the Packers to win and cover the handicap.
