The first NFL playoff match from the NFC comes from the Bird’s Nest as the Seattle Seahawks, winners of the West, take on the Detroit Lions who were pipped to the North title by the Green Bay Packers last week.
There is no time for the Lions to dwell on last week. They know that it is win or bust from here on in and how they react to that will be interesting. The Seahawks are becoming playoff regulars and know how to get the job done.
Seattle Seahawks
It hasn’t always been plain sailing for the Seahawks this season but they faced little in the way of opposition in their division and in the end qualified for the postseason quite comfortably. They know if they win this match their reward will be a trip to Atlanta Falcons next week so they can see a deep path in the playoffs.
Much is rightly said about the Seahawks’ defence but their offense can be as explosive as any when it all clicks and when Russell Wilson is in form he can make plays that decide matches in the blink of an eye. With that in mind the Seahawks are well set up for playoff football especially at home in their noisy stadium.
Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions had led the NFC North for much of the season but they couldn’t repel the Green Bay Packers who finished the campaign fast to deny them the title which sent the Lions to the west to face Seattle in this playoff match.
Detroit head there with an underrated offense although admittedly Matt Stafford’s finger injury isn’t ideal but their defence has also performed well this season so if they can put it all together they can pull off an upset here and head to Dallas next week. They will need to be at their best though.
Betting
I’ve a feeling this will be the fiercest fought match of the four in this round. Neither defence gives an awful lot away and both offenses can get involved in lengthy drives so I’m not sure this will be particularly high scoring.
Admittedly the Detroit defence has leaked 73pts in the last two weeks but they were playing two top offenses in those matches. Their defence was in good nick prior to that and if they can get back to that level here I expect the scoring to be low. Seattle don’t concede a lot either so a points total of 44 just looks a few too high to me.
