Looking at the week one schedule I like the betting markets in three Sunday games.
Early Games (6.00pm kickoff UK time)
Green Bay Packers at Jacksonville Jaguars
Green Bay are red hot favourites to beat Jacksonville at odds around the 1.4 mark (the Jags are 2.8-3.1). As mentioned in my NFL side markets betting preview I think Jacksonville are a team that improves a lot this season. This game will be a lot closer than the betting line suggests. The game is in Jacksonville – the expected temperature is in the 90sF. The Jags hot off another impressive off-season will be fired up here. Of course Green Bay have QB Aaron Rodgers and a now healthy WR Jordy Nelson. They will pace an attack that can and will score lots of points this season. Jacksonsville have a lot of new players on defence and traditionally there is a bedding in period of a few games before they function as a unit.
I’m tempted by the spread of taking the Jags at 1.91 +5 (Skybet) especially if they can get the running game going with Chris Ivory and T.J. Yeldon.
My bet choice is in the player markets. I like Blake Bortles to be in the mix at season’s end to have the most passing yards in the NFL. Here his line is 257.5 and I think he will exceed this at odds of 1.91. He has two explosive WR’s in Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns plus a TE in Julius Thomas who should see more targets in 2016. One big play and Bortles would need only 200 yards the rest of the game. I like this!
Oakland Raiders at New Orleans Saints
I’m a Raiders fan and like a lot of sports fans hate betting on them. They have been wretched for a long time but finally are on the track to contend for a playoff spot in 2016. Oakland struggles to win on opening day so I’m not backing them to win – even though I think they have a strong chance.
The value play here is the Total Points Line at 51.5. Both teams have offences that will score a lot of points. The Drew Brees led New Orleans passing attack regularly leads the NFL in yards. The Raiders with young QB Derek Carr, WRs Amari Cooper & Michael Crabtree plus young TW Clive Walford are set to explode. New Orleans ranked 31st or 32nd in all meaningful pass defence stats in 2015. They haven’t improved the personnel in the secondary but have gained by elimination (they sacked the defensive coach). Oakland feature 3 new starters in the secondary. They will be better here than 2015 but they won’t gel immediately and Brees will be a tough matchup.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there are 600+ passing yards in the game! I can see a shootout type of game with a score in the 35-31 range and that easily covers the Total Points Line.
Late Games (9.00pm kickoff UK time)
Miami Dolphins at Seattle Seahawks
This is a tough matchup for the Dolphins. They travel to the west coast to face a Seahawks team that are tough to beat in Seattle. Miami have issues with their running game, their OL and possibly with their WR’s if DeVante Parker is not fully fit. I have tipped Miami to struggle in 2016 and they almost couldn’t start with a tougher opener.
Seattle on the other hand are well-balanced on offence. They feature a strong passing game led by QB Russell Wilson and a deeep running game with RB Thomas Rawls and others. The defence is fearsome – excellent in pass coverage and swarming in run defence. I really think there is a strong chance of a blowout in this game.
I love Seattle on the spread market, even at -10.0 at 1.91.
