The group stage of the Olympic football competition concludes at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Tuesday when all four groups are wrapped up on a bumper day of action which by the end of it we will know the quarter final line-up.
We already know a couple of the teams who are through to the next phase and the other spots in the last eight will be finalised over another day of four kick off times across France on what has all the makings of being a dramatic day of football.
Group A
The host nation France have one foot in the knockout stages and they can confirm their quarter final spot when they take on New Zealand with Thierry Henry and his charges going into the Marseille clash knowing that a point will get them through to the next round. New Zealand have to better the USA result if they want to make it through which means that the States are in control of their own destiny. They face Guinea knowing that a win will all but see them into the quarter final but were Guinea by two goals and New Zealand lose it would be the Africans who will progress.
Group B
We have a repeat of the Euro 2024 group which featured Ukraine in Group B as all four teams head into the final match of the section locked on three points so we effectively have a pair of knockout matches for a spot in the last eight. Argentina head into the last set of matches knowing that they only have to draw with Ukraine in order to make it through to the knockout stage while Ukraine know if they lose they are out. Morocco will be through with a draw against Iraq if there is a winner in the other game but Iraq have to beat the Africans if they are going to keep their Olympic hopes alive.

Group C
Things are a little more straightforward in Group C which is actually the first group to conclude at these Olympic Games. We already know that Spain are through to the knockout stage but they can ensure they win the group if they hold or win against Egypt. Egypt need a draw from that match in order to go through in second but should they lose they will open the door for the Dominican Republic who would need to beat the already eliminated Dominican Republic and overturn a three goal difference with Egypt if they are to make it through.
Group D
Japan are already through to the next phase in Group D courtesy of two wins from their opening two matches and barring something ridiculous in terms of results and goal difference swings they will win the group but they can ensure they come first if they avoid defeat to Israel who have to win to keep their campaign alive and hope the other match goes their way. Paraguay are in control of their own destiny. They will make the quarter final if they can beat Mali but should Mali win that game it will be the Africans who make it through unless Israel beat Japan by two more goals than a Mali win.
Betting
There isn’t a massive amount that I like over the course of Tuesday but the match between USA and Guinea could quickly turn into something special because although the USA are in control of their own destiny, they can’t play for a draw just in case New Zealand pick up a win against what you would imagine will be a weakened France side. Guinea don’t just need to win but they have to win by at least two goals if they are going to go through so this one is nicely poised for goals.
If USA score first in this game then Guinea are going to need to take all sorts of risks to get back into it knowing they will need three to have any chance of progressing while if Guinea score first, while they will need to keep going because they would need another goal, USA would need to come out in case New Zealand are getting the result that they need. This one is nicely set up for goals to flow naturally and I’m happy to take over 3 as a result.
