We have had a look at the outright market for the PDC World Darts Championship and ahead of the tournament getting underway there is enough time to take a look deeper into the quarter markets, beginning with the first quarter.
This is the section which is headlined by the world number one and former world champion Gerwyn Price, who is defending the money he picked up when he won this title two years ago so he is under a bit of pressure which could interest the other 23 players in it.
Draw
(1) Gerwyn Price v Luke Woodhouse/Vladyslav Omelchenko
(32) Raymond van Barneveld v Ryan Meikle/Lisa Ashton
(16) Ryan Searle v Adam Gawlas/Richie Burnett
(17) Jose de Sousa v Simon Whitlock/Christian Perez
(8) James Wade v Jim Williams/Sebastian Bialecki
(25) Gabriel Clemens v William O’Connor/Beau Greaves
(9) Danny Noppert v Ritchie Edhouse/David Cameron
(24) Daryl Gurney v Alan Soutar/Mal Cuming
Preview
If you have read my World Championship previews in the past then you’ll know with 24 players in each quarter I like to split the draw for each section in half to make things a little easier to work out. That means we have a red half and a green half, the winners of each will make the quarter final. In the red section Gerwyn Price will be expected to dominate proceedings but Raymond Barneveld beat him over 31 legs at the Grand Slam last month and could oppose him in round three Ryan Searle and Jose de Sousa is expected to be the other round three match but the likes of Simon Whitlock and Richie Burnett will be out to stop that happening.
In the green part of the draw the last 16 clash is expected to be James Wade against Danny Noppert but it is no secret that the Wade record in this tournament is bang average so Gabriel Clemens in particular will be interested. Daryl Gurney hasn’t really offered much TV form for a while but he will feel he can be competitive in this green part of the draw. Jim Williams is a world finalist in his career and Alan Soutar was a quarter finalist here a year ago. Beau Greaves will have plenty of eyes on her as she plays in this tournament for the first time.

Betting
My outright bet is in this quarter in Danny Noppert so I am hoping that he will come through this quarter. I’m not going to back him to do so because of the presence of Gerwyn Price but there is something telling me that the world number one, who is going to pile his way down the rankings if he goes out early here, might just be under enough pressure that he isn’t guaranteed to go deep in the tournament, especially with the nonsense he’ll have to put up with from Christmas party goers in the crowd.
Price has only once come out of his quarter in this tournament with a crowd present so I think it could be worth backing someone from the green section just to make the quarter final, which is effectively win that part of the draw. Ryan Searle has made the last 16 three times in the four goes he’s had at this tournament and if he does that again here he will be one win away from landing a punt at a fair 9/2 because I don’t see Adam Gawlas, Richie Burnett, Jose de Sousa, Simon Whitlock or Christian Perez stopping him from getting that far. Price would be a stumbling block in the last 16 but Searle would have the scoring power to go with him. I’ll take the chance Searle, who just a few weeks ago was involved in one of the matches of the season against Dirk van Duijvenbode at the Players Championship Finals, can reach the last eight here.
