PDC World Darts Championship 2023 – 3rd Quarter Tips and Betting Preview

The third quarter of the PDC World Darts Championship draw is the beginning of the bottom half and it is where the tournament will get underway as it is the section which homes the defending champion Peter Wright.

Wright will be the favourite to come through the quarter but since he won the world title he hasn’t exactly pulled up trees throughout the rest of 2022 and he might be vulnerable to a form horse in this section.

Draw

(2) Peter Wright v Mickey Mansell/Ben Robb

(31) Kim Huybrechts v Keane Barry/Grant Sampson

(15) Dimitri Van den Bergh v Rowby-John Rodriguez/Lourence Ilagan

(18) Krzysztof Ratajski v Danny Jansen/Paolo Nebrida

(7) Jonny Clayton v Steve Beaton/Danny van Trijp

(26) Brendan Dolan v Jamie Hughes/Jimmy Hendriks

(10) Nathan Aspinall v Boris Krcmar/Toru Suzuki

(23) Callan Rydz v Josh Rock/Jose Justicia

Preview

Usually given the way a seeding system works, the number two seed tends to have a fairly comfortable early draw with him running into 15, 18 and 31 seeds on his way to the quarter final. Peter Wright hasn’t had that sort of luck though because there are much easier draws than Dimitri Van den Bergh, Krzysztof Ratajski and Kim Huybrechts, none of whom are strangers to going deep in TV major tournaments. If that isn’t enough two talented youngsters are in here as well in Keane Barry and Rowby-John Rodriguez.

The green section isn’t a huge amount easier but it does have two standout players in it in Jonny Clayton and Nathan Aspinall who could well line up to face each other in a tasty looking last 16 clash. It is hard to see Brendan Dolan or Callan Rydz from stopping that match from happening given the form they bring into the week but one player certainly could. That is Josh Rock who has made shockwaves through the PDC this year despite his relatively young age.

Betting

Nathan Aspinall is my outright bet from the bottom half of the draw and I’m not going to oppose him because I really like the form he is in but I hate having more than one bet running on the same man in a tournament like this so I won’t back him for the quarter as well. Instead I’ll look at the red section and look to attack the market to reach the quarter final, which in terms of the way I’ve done this preview is just to win the red section.

Clearly Peter Wright is the man expected to get there but I always think the defending champion is vulnerable in the early rounds of this tournament. He plays on the opening night against someone who has already been on the stage that evening and then has to wait 12 days to play his next match. That makes me think it could be worth opposing him. Dimitri Van den Bergh is the obvious one to go with but his form has been very patchy of late so I’m going to take a chance on the Austrian star Rowby-John Rodriguez who has had a good year. Rodriguez has made the final of a European Tour event this year and beat Price at the European Championship and in a wide open section outside of Wright he could be the value at 12/1.
