Players Championship Snooker 2025 – Day 4 Tips and Betting Preview

The quarter finals continue at the Players Championship on Thursday when two more matches take place as we conclude the line-up for one of the semi-finals and find out the first person into the other in Telford.

The quality in this tournament is almost a guarantee with the 16 leading money earners of the season here but the two matches on Thursday will throw up four world champions taking to the baize on a highly anticipated day of snooker.

Afternoon Session

Mark Selby vs Neil Robertson

The opening match of the day sees the winners of four tournaments so far this season battling it out when the British Open and Welsh Open champion Mark Selby goes up against the winner of the English Open and World Grand Prix in Neil Robertson in a tasty clash.

These two men are no stranger to facing off against each other but this will be only their second meeting in a ranking event since December 2022, which is quite a surprise when you consider that they have been in lofty positions in the rankings throughout the majority of that time. Robertson won their meeting earlier in the season in Saudi Arabia but that was before Selby bounced back to the form he has shown at the British Open and since winning it. Robertson looked in decent order at the World Grand Prix and got better the longer that tournament went on and he may well be hoping for a repeat here because he wasn’t fantastic in beating Stuart Bingham in the opening round. Selby certainly was. He saw off the challenge of Si Jiahui with the assistance of four centuries and when Selby scores he is incredibly tough to beat. I just sensed that Robertson wasn’t completely comfortable in the opening round whereas Selby is going nicely about his work and I’m actually a little surprised that Selby isn’t a clearer favourite than he is here. He played the better in the opening round, beat a stronger opponent and has a much better all-round game than Robertson. It is Selby for me in this one.

Evening Session

Judd Trump vs Shaun Murphy

The second quarter final on Thursday comes along in the evening session where the number one seed and best player in the world, Judd Trump, takes on The Masters champion Shaun Murphy in the pick of the last eight clashes.

Trump came through against an out of his depth Lei Peifan in the opening round but quite how much we can take from that remains to be seen. One thing we do know is that Murphy looks to be right on top of his game at the minute. It took three special frames from Neil Robertson to get the better of him in Hong Kong and The Magician has already seen off Barry Hawkins here. I’m not convinced Trump is firing on all cylinders at the minute but I still wouldn’t want to take him on. There is a real case to be made that Murphy is value at 2/1 and if Selby wins the opening match of the day I’ll probably talk myself into getting involved in a small way at that price. Trump has won the last six meetings between the two, including three this season, and I’m not surprised because when Murphy is slightly off he leaves himself wide open to Trump, but when Murphy is knocking everything in he can be a daunting figure to play, and in recent times he has made more than he has missed. This is a fascinating match which I’m going to leave alone to begin with but there is certainly value on The Masters champion.
