The Premier League weekend is another well spread out one this week and it begins with five matches taking place across the division on Saturday on a day where we could see another significant move in the title race.
This is a usual Saturday in that we have two live matches to enjoy in the UK and the many other ways of staying up to date on the 3pm matches which will have a bit of extra attention to them given who will be in action.
Early Kick Off
The action begins at the Emirates Stadium where two supposed contenders for the top four collide when Arsenal host Manchester United. Historically this has always been a feisty fixture but right now this is two poor sides meeting, although Arsenal did at least show in midweek that when the need arises they have what it takes to be competitive. Manchester United look a right mess so this feels like a good chance for Arsenal to move three points clear of rivals Tottenham in the race for Champions League football next season.
3pm Matches
It is the Etihad Stadium where much of the 3pm attention will be as Manchester City look to open up a four point gap at the top of the table when they host a Watford side whose need for points look to be beyond the desperate stage after the midweek results. Watford head to Manchester seven points adrift of safety with matches running out so they are in a dire position. This realistically is all about City though. They will look to put distance between themselves and Liverpool here.
There is one other match which will impact the bottom of the table as Norwich City host Newcastle United. The visitors are safe now but keep talking about a possible top half finish so it might be that they don’t give up on their season just yet. Norwich’s campaign never really got going and the light on their Premier League life is about to be turned off. Aston Villa welcome Leicester City in the other match on the afternoon.

Late Game
We finish with a London derby in the later game to kick off. This one will have the race for the top four back in the spotlight when Brentford, who if the 40 point mark is the safety mark are one point from survival, host Tottenham Hotspur who sit above their rivals Arsenal purely on goal difference heading into what could be a pivotal Saturday in the quest for Champions League football next season. It could be that Arsenal have put the pressure on Tottenham earlier in the day so it will be interesting to see how Antonio Conte’s men respond.
Betting
I get the thought process that Newcastle United will be on the beach from here on in this season but that photo that did the rounds of the owners, staff and players altogether earlier in the week tells me that the Magpies might just play out the remainder of the campaign giving of their best. That might not be good news for Norwich City who are desperate to pick up a Saturday win and give themselves even a glimmer of hope of staying in the Premier League.
The fact remains that they have only won three of their last 20 matches in the league this season and they have all come against the three sides immediately above them in the table. They haven’t beaten anyone remotely good this season and I’m not convinced they are going to beat a Newcastle side who have improved immeasurably at the back since Dan Burn arrived and who have more than enough threat going forward to expose Norwich defensively. I like the odds against on Newcastle who would surely be odds on here if there wasn’t that ‘on the beach’ concern.
