Premier League 2024-25 – Everton vs Liverpool Tips, TV and Betting Preview

There is one match outstanding in the Premier League season and it takes place on Wednesday night in what could be a huge evening as far as the title race is concerned as Everton host their rivals Liverpool in the last Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park.

Liverpool have the chance to move nine points clear at the top of the table if they can come back across Stanley Park with the win. Everton should be safe enough now and their primary aim will be to spoil the Liverpool party somewhat.

Where to watch

The match is a rescheduled one from earlier in the season but it remains on TNT Sports 1 in the UK. The build-up begins at 6.30pm ahead of the slightly earlier than usual 7.30pm kick off.

Everton

A month or so ago you could be forgiven for really fearing for Everton this season. They weren’t winning matches and by the end of the Sean Dyche reign they weren’t scoring goals either and that was a recipe for a potential relegation dogfight should one of the bottom three have found a run of form. The Toffees hierarchy acted and replaced Dyche with David Moyes and it has had an immediate effect. They have picked up some results which have moved them clear of the bottom three but will have been disappointed to have gone out of the cup at the weekend.

The big thing Moyes has done is found an approach, a setup and a style that gets men into the box more in open play, even though he hasn’t had his strongest personnel available. Everton were always going to be defensively astute after Dyche so with goals added to their game they are a more dangerous force. Recent results mean that they can attack this with a bit of freedom and give this a real good go in front if a packed house guaranteed to create an incredible atmosphere.

Liverpool

It looks as though Liverpool are on a march towards winning a second Premier League title and you get the impression that even a dent in their plans when they went out of the FA Cup at Plymouth Argyle at the weekend will not detract them from their path to glory. A trip across Stanley Park might be a bigger stumbling block for them to overcome though but you do feel that if Liverpool can win this they won’t be for reeling in over the remainder of the campaign.

After 23 matches in the Premier League this term, Liverpool are yet to lose away from home and they have only been beaten once throughout the campaign so they will make the short trip to Goodison Park full of confidence. Although they went out of the cup at the weekend they were able to rest all of their star players so they will come into this one with an ounce of freshness about them. Liverpool also have that perfect combination in any league of being the top scorers and having the tightest defence.

Team News

Everton boss David Moyes is hopeful of having Vitalii Mykolenko available for this match after he missed the cup loss on Saturday but there will be on Dwight McNeil, Dominic Calvert-Lewin or Seamus Coleman. Carlos Alcaraz could make his first start.

Liverpool are missing Joe Gomez who picked up an injury in the defeat to Plymouth at the weekend but there is a chance that Trent Alexander-Arnold could be included after he has recovered from the injury which has seen him miss the last couple of weeks.

Betting

This is usually a competitive match regardless of the situation that both teams are in and I would be surprised if this ends up being any different to that. Goals generally come at a premium here and I would expect that trend to continue. That probably opens up the likelihood of under 2.75 goals landing, as it has done in 11 of the last 14 meetings between the two and at odds against it is certainly huge value based on that statistic, particularly with Everton unlikely to roll over and give Liverpool an easy ride.

While Everton have improved under David Moyes, their two home wins have come against Tottenham and Leicester, two leaky defences and they failed to score against Bournemouth in the cup at the weekend. Liverpool have kept clean sheets in three of their last four away games with high flying Nottingham Forest the team that the conceded against which isn’t a disgrace. I don’t see any reason why this one would automatically catch fire, especially when all of those recent matches were under the chaos the Jurgen Klopp provided whereas things are much more controlled under Arne Slot. I’ll play the under.
