The last Premier League matches of 2024 will be played out on Monday evening when three games take place in the division on an evening where European contenders will be on show as well as a relegation threatened team.
There is one match on the TV which forms part of the Monday Night Football programme while the other two games should have regular updates throughout the coverage but aren’t available to watch on TV in the UK. We’ll kick the preview off with the TV match.
Manchester United vs Newcastle United (20.00 – Sky Main Event & Sky Premier League)
The TV cameras head up to Old Trafford on Monday night for the clash between a struggling Manchester United side and a Newcastle United outfit who are beginning to click into the gear which took them to the Champions League in recent times.
Champions League is where Manchester United will be wanting to ply their trade next season but they are a country mile from fulfilling that ambition and really need to start to find some results. That won’t be done with any guarantee without some serious reinforcement in January but they won’t arrive by this time. I must admit, I’m not completely sold on Newcastle United away from home but they have clicked into a groove in December and have won their last three matches comfortably enough, scoring 11 goals and not conceding. In contrast, Manchester United have lost four of their last five and in the one they won at Manchester City they were behind for long periods before turning it around late. United look in an absolute mess at the minute and if Newcastle have anything about them they should be capitalising here. I think taking them on the Asian handicap line is a safe play. I’ll also nibble at the first and anytime prices for Dan Burn to score. We’ve seen in the last few weeks that Manchester United are having a real issue defending corners and Burn has the height to be a real problem at them. Burn doesn’t have the greatest goal record but he doesn’t always play centre-back for Newcastle and he certainly doesn’t come up against teams who concede goals from corners like this United team do very often. At 40/1 to score first and 16/1 anytime he looks worth nibbling.

Aston Villa vs Brighton and Hove Albion (19.45)
There are two matches away from UK TV coverage and one of those comes from Villa Park where Aston Villa and Brighton and Hove Albion will resume their quest for European football next season when they meet in a key game in Birmingham.
Both of these teams could be considered in indifferent form going into the match. Villa have lost two of their last three, although both of those were away from home, while Brighton are now suddenly without a win in six matches. That is certainly a run they will be wanting to end here but with a 3-3-3 record away from home who knows what they are going to come up with. Villa are generally a lot better at home than they are on their travels but I’m not convinced by them defensively at all so I fancy the idea of both teams scoring in this match but to bump the price up from 8/13 to something more acceptable, I’ll add over 2.5 goals onto the equation too. This bet has landed in 11 Villa games this season, five of which have been here at Villa Park, while 11 Brighton games have cashed here including five away from the Amex. Just under evens for it to land again feels big.
Ipswich Town vs Chelsea (19.45)
The other match on Monday night comes from Portman Road where teams at opposite ends of the table meet as Ipswich Town play host to Chelsea with the home side looking to move to within a point of safety when they host a Chelsea side who will be wanting to close the gap between themselves and Liverpool at the top to seven points.
Just as Chelsea were beginning to look like real title runners, they have gone two matches without a win and have to win this if they are to keep in the hunt for the top spot. Ipswich have been competitive for much of the opening half of the season but just recently there have been signs that the going is getting a little tough. They have lost five of their last six matches, failing to score in four of those defeats, and you would imagine that they could be there for the taking for Chelsea in this match. Chelsea have already been to Wolves and won 6-2 and Southampton and won 5-1 this season so that represents danger for Ipswich. Given the need for a Chelsea win and the heavy schedule I would be surprised if the Blues reach those heights but Newcastle cruised to a 4-0 win on this ground recently so it could happen. I’m not convinced either way enough to take a bet on this one.
