Premier League 2024-25 – Sunday 1st September Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The last Premier League weekend prior to the international break concludes on Sunday afternoon when the final three matches are played out on an afternoon where a number of top four contenders show their hand again.

Two of the three matches will be live on TV for us in the UK to be able to watch and given the profile of the other one it would be a surprise if there is not regular updates on it throughout the course of the coverage.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur (13.30 – Sky Main Event & Sky Premier League)

The opening game in front of the TV cameras sees two sides who will very much have their sights set on the top four this season battling it out when Newcastle United welcome Tottenham Hotspur to St James’ Park for a decent looking clash.

Both sides have opened up their campaign with a home win and an away draw and while Tottenham have looked a lot more convincing in their victories, Newcastle will now know what they are working with in terms of ins and outs and they will hope that allows them to settle down and start to look a little more convincing. Tottenham have started the season really well and probably should have two wins to their name, such was their dominance in the draw they picked up with Leicester City. Spurs have only faced Leicester and Everton though so it could be that they have been flattered by ordinary opposition. My feeling is we’ll see goals here but Newcastle haven’t really fired yet and there is no Dominic Solanke for the visitors so I’ll just have a watching brief on this one I think.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace (13.30)

The one match which doesn’t have the TV cameras covering it live in the UK is the latest London derby where Chelsea will look to build on their huge win over Wolves last week when they host a Crystal Palace side who have surprisingly lost their opening two matches.

After having the vultures circling throughout the summer, I would imagine that Palace are quite happy that the transfer window has closed and the only real damage that was done to their squad was the loss of Michael Olise, which happened early enough for them to move on from, and Joachim Andersen whose absence might be felt a little given the relatively late nature of his move. Importantly though, Ebere Eze is still at the club as are Marc Guehi and Adam Wharton among others. Chelsea won’t need telling about transfers. Once again they have overseen a large turnover of players but it didn’t seem to hold them back when they won 6-2 at Wolves last weekend. I would be very surprised if there are not goals in this match. Chelsea do look like they have a wealth of attacking options and we saw most of them flex their muscles against Wolves last week but there are no shortage of goals in the Crystal Palace side either. These two teams haven’t really come out of the blocks defensively yet so I like the idea of this one having more than three goals.

Manchester United vs Liverpool (16.00 – Sky Main Event & Sky Premier League)

The last match of the weekend takes us to Old Trafford where Manchester United will go in search of a second win of the campaign when they take on a Liverpool side who have won both of their matches to date and are yet to concede a Premier League goal this term.

United looked better than many suggested in their opening win over Fulham but then couldn’t build on that against Brighton last week. They are still a work in progress, as making signings so late in the transfer window would tell us and it will be interesting to see how they cope with one of the expected better sides in the league. On the face of it there hasn’t been a huge amount of difference in Liverpool under Arne Slot with the exception being that perhaps things aren’t quite as chaotic under the Dutchman. This will be his first significant test as Liverpool manager though. You would imagine these two managers will know how to coach against each other from their Eredivisie days and that adds an interesting complexion to proceedings. I haven’t got a real feel for this one though so I’m happy to sit this one out.
