The Premier League reaches the halfway stage of the season this weekend and the first two sides to hit the halfway point are Hull City and Everton when the two meet at the KC Stadium on Friday night.
A win for Hull in this match would move them to within a point of Crystal Palace who are just above the relegation zone. Hull would also go above Swansea and Sunderland temporarily too. Everton would give themselves some breathing space in the race for seventh spot.
Hull City
The Tigers have picked up just five points from their last 30 available but in recent times especially they have been one of the unluckiest sides going around. How they didn’t score at West Ham I don’t know and they have been really unlucky in a couple of other games too.
Clearly they need to sort themselves in the forward areas because against the sides below the top six they defend pretty well and are difficult to break down but scoring has been an issue all season and if they are going to survive this season they will need to find some goals either in what they have or in January.
Everton
The inconsistency of Everton has been there for all to see throughout the campaign but they come into this match off the back of two wins in their last three with a defeat to Liverpool sandwiched in between them and that was suffered right at the death so maybe they have sorted out their issues and they will finish the season strongly.
Everton look to be getting things right defensively since the defeat against Watford and that will please them because they have always had the attacking personnel to get the job done. Everton arrested a run of four straight away defeats with a win at Leicester on Boxing Day.
Team News
Hull go into this match without their long-term injury victims Will Keane, Moses Odubajo and Abel Hernandez so Mike Phelan could name an unchanged side.
Everton remain without goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg as he is still injured. Joel Robles will remain in the side. James McCarthy and Yannick Bolasie are among those also on the sidelines with injury.
Betting
The odds would suggest that Everton are good things in this match but I’m not convinced that is the case. I think we see in their home matches they are notoriously bad at breaking sides down and I don’t expect Hull to leave too much space early on.
At some point though Hull are going to have to come out and play because they need to start winning home games. They just need a change of luck and someone will get turned over soon. I’m not saying that will be here but I would be surprised if they don’t threaten in this match. That might lead to Everton getting chances at the other end so both teams to score appeals to me.
