The latest round of Premier League fixtures concludes on Sunday with a Super Sunday double header which is finally worthy of the name. Three of the biggest clubs in England are on show in the two matches on Sunday while one of the improvers over the last few years join them too in what should be a big day of football action.
Man City vs Southampton
The action begins with the leaders going into the weekend Manchester City hoping to regain top spot when they host Southampton at the Etihad. Southampton could go sixth with a win of their own so both have plenty to play for here.
If you listen to the talk then City are in something of a crisis at the minute having failed to win any of their last four matches in all competitions but as with most talk that is a load of nonsense but even so they will be eager for a win here to show that isn’t the case.
Southampton are going about their business quite nicely at the minute. They lost in the San Siro on Thursday night but that was a match they absolutely dominated. Prior to that they were unbeaten in their previous five matches so Claude Puel has certainly got his style across to his side.
I think this should be a good match to watch. There is nothing to believe both sides won’t look to win and believe they can win. I think both appreciate they are going to have to score. Southampton are tighter at the back than City but not many contain the home side at the Etihad but going the other way City are wide open at the back and Southampton can nail them on the counter attack. I like over 2.5 goals here.
Chelsea vs Man Utd
This is being billed as the main event purely because Jose Mourinho returns to Stamford Bridge for the first time as an opposing manager since his sacking last season but if he sets his side up to suck the life out of the game of football like he did at Anfield on Monday night then this may not be the spectacle it is being suggested it could be.
Chelsea could move into the top four with a win here so they don’t lack for extra motivation but that Mourinho dynamic certainly hangs over this match and for me at least makes it tricky to bet on. I guess those desperate for a bet should get some joy on the under 2.5 goals but it isn’t the greatest price in the world and both do have the ability to be opened up so I wouldn’t want to commit too much on that. I’ll sit this one out I think.
