Ryder Cup 2021 – Side Markets Tips and Betting Preview

We’ve covered the majority of the main markets ahead of the Ryder Cup 2021 getting underway but while we wait for the opening ceremony to come along there are still a couple of the side markets that we can get stuck into before the Friday foursome pairings are announced.

There are a number of markets still to look at from the captains picks to the day scores and session winners right up to things like the total points for each player. I’ll save the day scores and session winners for the respective daily previews but there are two other bets I like.

Top USA Rookie

Unbelievably there are six rookies in the Ryder Cup this year, although you probably wouldn’t think it because the majority of them have played in the Presidents Cup and a number of the sextet have won big golf tournaments since the last Ryder Cup. The six in question in this market are Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Daniel Berger, Harris English and Tony Finau.

I think this market can be reduced to just Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele for the simple reason that they are the only players I see playing five matches. Morikawa has an injury concern with his back and with the power USA have in their side he isn’t likely to play the fourballs sessions and the same goes for Harris English. I don’t see Berger or Finau playing all the sessions either so I have this as a match between Cantlay and Schauffele. They are going to be paired together all week so they’ll go into the singles level but I fancy Cantlay’s form, particularly with the putter, to give him the best chance of winning a singles match so at 3/1 he looks a natural and obvious pick here.

Player Points

Every player in this tournament has a points line priced up whether it be Jordan Spieth or Bernd Wiesberger and everyone in between. There is an element of working out who might play what sessions and who could win how many points when we look through these but there is one where we don’t really need to need to put much guesswork into the equation and that is the line for Justin Thomas.

We know that barring something unforeseen Thomas is going to partner Jordan Spieth all weekend. They are good friends and blend well together on the golf course and in Paris three years ago they won three of the four matches they played. A repeat of that will see the over 2.5 points line covered here but even if they don’t quite get there in the pairs matches, Thomas would probably be a favourite to beat every European bar Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy. Thomas has shown he enjoys and gets up for these team events which is often half the battle. I am surprised he is odds against to pick up three or more points. I’m happy to back him to do so though.
